I smiled as my family surrounded me singing happy birthday. I blew out the candles, but I didn't know what to wish for since it already came true.
We decided to go in our little backyard so we would have a little more space and it was nice out. Everyone began slicing pieces of cake. I looked around and didn't see my mother.
"I'll be right back", I said to Isis, who seemed preoccupied on her slice. She nodded and continued to eat. I went into the house a heard voices.
I walked in some more and realized they were coming from the porch. I put my ear up to the door and listened.
"Why are you here? It's too late to try to be in her life Terrell. She's 18 now and going to college in the fall. It's her birthday and I don't want her to have to deal with your bullshit like I did", said my mom.
I knew she was talking to my Dad when she said Terrell.
"I have been in her life....well partially. I send her things all the time. I just don't see her like I want to.", said my Dad.
"You do what?! You've been sending her things? And she didn't tell me? Bullshit. My baby tells me everything. ", she said angrily.
"I told her not to tell because I know how you are. Let go of the past because you're effecting our daughters futures.", he said.
I opened the door to see my mom on the verge of tears and my Dad looking with apologetic eyes.
"Tell me what happened when I was a baby. I'm 18 and I deserve answers", I said while crossing my arms.
My mom sighed and sat down in one of the chairs we had on the porch.
"Fine", she said weakly.
"I think I'll come back later ", said my Dad as he handed me my present and hopped in his car.
My mom shook her head at him as he drove off. She mumbled something under her breath but I couldn't hear her.
She sighed before starting.
"It was when you were 2 years old, the day after New Years. I came home from work to hear a woman moaning. I automatically got upset because the only people home were you, DJ and your father. I tried to open our bedroom door, but it was locked.....so I busted that bitch down. I found your father on top of his twin sisters' bestfriend Stacey. When he saw me he stopped what he was doing and tried to put on some clothes.I ran out of our room and went into the room you shared with DJ who was only 5. I told him to pack up some clothes as I packed yours. Stacey had left and your father was going ape shit. Trying to get me to stay. I left and took you and DJ to your grandma's house. The next day, I found out that your father's sister, who was also my bestfriend, knew about the affair that he had held with Stacey for 4 months.I was devastated that they both betrayed me and on top of that, I had just found out I was pregnant with Tahiry hours prior to that incident. I stopped talking to your father and his sister. As you got older, your father started to come visit you and DJ less and less. By the time Tahiry was 2, he'd only seen her 3 times. It took a toll on DJ. That's why he moved out so young. But your father didn't have any contact with any of you until recently I guess. As for Tabitha, I don't know where she is", said my mother.
I nodded before pulling my mom in for a hug. She was a strong woman.
"Tabitha has a shop called Shabazz. I've been working for her for a few months, but I'll quit if you want me to. I didn't know why you kept me from her", I said truthfully.
She shook her head and sighed.
"No baby, as much as I hate to admit it. Your father's right. I need to let go of the past."
I breathed a sigh of relief.
"Now that that is over, you have a party to attend to.", she said while linking her arms with mine.
Tahiry
Before mom came outside, I got in the back of dad's car. I need to get away for a while. I'm in too deep with Messiah and this is the only way out. I hope Tahja understands.
