"It's just Reece, Mom. He says that his parents will be here soon."
I turned back to Singleton, smiling.
"You're mean." I stuck my tongue out and laughed
"You're just mad cause I didn't kiss you."
He started to pout.
"Pouting isn't going to work."
"Nicki, will you go find your brother and tell him he's eating here tonight?"
"Sure. C'mon Reece."
We walked around town "looking" for David. We were mostly just talking and not even looking.
"Nicki, I like you."
"I know Reeses." He rolled his eyes at the nickname I had given him after he shoved 4 Reese Cups in his mouth at once.
As we turned a corner down an alley way, my back was pressed up against the wall.
"Reece, wha-"
"It's been like an hour or so since I last kissed you and I have this feeling inside of me, like a craving for your lips again. I'm going crazy. Just kiss me Nicki, please."
"C'mon Reece. It was an accident, without it, you wouldn't be feeling this way."
"But that's not true. Each day I've spent with you, was another piece of wood inside of me and when we kissed, it was the spark that set that wood on fire." I laughed.
"You're great, I hope you know this." I grabbed his face and pulled him closer to me.
"Does me being great earn me a kiss?"
"Maybe on the cheek." I smirked.
"You're killin me Nicki!" I laughed and closed the space between us.
"Better?"
His eyes met mine.
"Much."
*at Mom's house*
"Amanda it's so good to see you." My mother hugged her.
"You as well." Amanda smiled.
The door opened and in came David with an annoyed look on his face.
"There he is." Mom said.
David rolled his eyes, and when he saw Singleton, I'm sure it was hard to hold back.
*after dinner*
"Thanks for the meal Ms. Andrews." Singleton told her.
"You are very welcome Reece."
"Hey mom, I'm gonna go hang out with Reese for a little bit. Is that okay?"
"Of course dear. I'll see you tomorrow."
I hugged my mom goodbye, and Reese and I left.
"You're mom is really cool."
"Thanks."
"Hey Andrews?"
"Yeah?"
"Can I take you somewhere?"
"I knew it. You were planning on killing me this entire time."
"You caught me." He laughed. "But seriously, can I?"
"I guess."
He took my hand and led me to the stream.
"Okay, this isn't really a surprise. We come here every other day."
He started to climb the tree house, and motioned for me to follow. I got to the top and saw him standing there with a baseball.
"Why do you have a baseball up here?"
He tossed it to me and of course, I caught it.
"Look at it."
I did, and written on the baseball were 5 words.
I like you. Be mine?
I looked at him, back at the ball, and back at him.
"I get it if you don't feel the same. I just thought with the kisses and every-" I cut him off with my lips against his.
"Is that a yes?"
"Am I the best baseball player you know?"
"Is that a trick question?"
I gave him the look.
"Okay okay. My answer is yes."
"Then you know mine."
*the next day*
"And you said yes, right?" Jenny asked.
"Of course I said yes. Last year he may have been a jerk, but he's really changed. He's sweet, he's funny, and God is he gorgeous."
They laughed.
"How does David feel about this?" Hayley asked me.
"Doesn't know. I'm pretty sure that if he finds out, he'll kill us both."
"I can't keep things from him Nicki."
"C'mon, please Hayley. Just give me some time. If this does work out, then I'll tell him."
After a few seconds Hayley finally agreed.
"Thank you thank you thank you!"
"What's got you so happy?" David asked, walking up to Hayley's pool deck.
"Nothing of your business." I told him.
"Whatever. Are you girls comin to play ball or what?"
"I thought we were planning on swimming today. It's been really hot lately."
David turned to see the guys at Hayley's gate with their swimtrunks.
"Fine. Have fun swimming."
"David, you know you can swim with us right?" Hayley asked.
"I ain't swimmin with a traitor."
"What does that mean?" Mac asked.
"I rode my bike by Singelton's field and heard him telling his friends that you and him are a thing."
"Well, there goes keeping it a secret."
"You were gonna keep this from me?"
"David, look, I'm sorry. I like him, okay?"
"No! Not okay! Do you remember last year when he tried to take the Sandlot? Do you remember when he punched Hayley in the stomach?"
"I get it. He's done bad things. But he's different."
"Different my ass."
"You know what? I'm leaving. I'm not hanging around where I'm not wanted."
That marked the start of a 2 week period of not stepping foot on the Sandlot.
