It was midnight when he heard a knock on his door. He had been wide awake since he'd sat down in his bed three hours ago. The day had been exhausting. He had helped his sister pack. Double packing was a task and a half. They'd packed things for his father to see and to be shipped off to the East; then they packed another bag full of essential clothes, things for the baby, toiletries, money and valuable jewels for his sister and her husband to take with them when they left.
Erick flipped the sheets off him and walked to the door. He had a good idea who was there to see him this late in the night. After all he was the one who had organized it.
When Erick opened the door he saw his sister standing there with a bag over her shoulder and just a simple night-dress on her body. He ushered her in and popped his head outside to make sure no one had seen her, and then closed the door.
"Why did you want me to come here?" She asked him as she plopped the bag down on the floor and taking a seat on the bed.
Erick didn't waste his time speaking. He quietly made his way to his cupboard and pulled it open. Amongst all his clothes was a locked drawer. It was locked and Erick carried the key to it around his neck. Pulling the key from his neck he opened it. It was all becoming real. He was really going to do this. Erick grabbed the small bag he had hidden away in the drawer the day before. In it was his ID, his passport, and a change of his clothes; it also had a hand written note explaining his plan. Erick turned around to face his confused looking sister.
"Take this." He said, and handed the bag over to her. Her frown deepened.
"What is this?" She asked, looking at the bag.
"Did you bring your documents?" He asked, ignoring her sisters' question. She nodded and reached down for her bag and pulled it up to her lap. Rummaging through it she drew out a bundle. Erick smiled and reached forward, silently asking for the documents.
Still confused, Salsa handed it to him. "What are you planning Erick?" She insisted "Why do you need my passport."
Erick sat down next to her and smiled softly before wrapping an arm around her, then explained that he only needed it because he was going to make some fakes for her. She looked at him, confused still and all Erick did to answer her question was point to the mirror in front of them hoping that she understood. But when she didn't respond the same way he expected her to he pulled away.
"Don't open that bag till tomorrow." He explained, without saying anything more about his plan. "I'll tell dad that I am leaving on a hunting trip and you will leave under my guise. Use the fakes to get out from the city."
"What?" She asked, confused, "What would happen when they come for me and I am not here?"
"Don't worry about it." He insisted, "You said you trusted me, and I hope you still do."
His sister bit her lip and nodded. "So, I leave tomorrow night with Thomas?"
"Yes, and take that bag with you." He stressed, and asked her to the small bag he had given her into the bag she had brought with him. "You will need it."
His entire plan depended on his father believing him when he tells the vile man that he was going to go away for a while. He knew it would work because ever since he was young his father paid no mind to him. He was looked at like the dirt beneath the man's shoes. Erick already had a high achieving older brother who was going to step up as a lord and take his father's place. He was the epitome of the perfect son. Erick didn't envy him for that though, because Louis was always under the scrutiny of their father and there was so much expected of him. His sister was treated like a princess. She was the only daughter amongst two sons. She was basically a gem. So, when it came to Erick it was clear that to his father he was not worth much at all. But in a way that was for the best. Despite getting treated worse than his older brother, he always had more freedom, shelter, and loving siblings.
