It had been a month since Erick had arrived at the palace, and not much had changed. Well, not much had changed as far as he could tell. He could never be sure how things were behind the scenes. The king continued to be kind to Erick, and it was clear by now that the king was far from what he had expected.
When the morning sun arose, casting its light into Erick's room, he found himself wide aware and staring up at the ceiling. His thoughts were a million miles away, but mostly lingered on his sister. Salsabil. He wondered how she was and whether she had managed to get away. How was her partner, were they not wed? How was her pregnancy and was she in good health. The questioned plagued him sometimes and he wished there was a way to contact her to see if she was okay.
The sacrifice he had made for her no longer felt like a sacrifice. He was living in luxury. Sure he lived in fear, but that fear had dwindled since. It was now nothing more than a flicker in the back of his thoughts. At least he had a roof over his head, three, sometimes four, meals a day, maids who catered to his every-whim and a king who treated him with respect. Ironically, what he had now was far more than what he had before, when he was living with his father. He was warm and fed and there was nothing more he could ask for.
But his sister.
His dear, loving sister, where was she.
Was she warm?
Fed?
Was she comfortable?
Did she think about him?
The questions were endless.
"Perhaps it is best to not wonder about things you not know the answer for." A soft voice spoke. Erick jolted from bed and looked up from where he sat. Aynos stood at the door, a tray in hand and a soft smile on her lips. Erick didn't say a word, and Aynos took that as a cue to continue. "If I may be as bold, you seem troubled." She approached him, "sometimes the answers we seek are not the answers we wish to discover."
Erick kept quiet, the woman certainly liked to speak in riddles. But she did have a point. What is done is done, and now he had to move on and hope that everything had worked out for the best. "You may be right, Aynos. I was...wondering about my si-Brother."
"I understand. It must be difficult to be so far away from family. I can attest to how difficult it can be when you're forced to be from those closest to you."
Erick nodded, and looked down at his hands.
"I was merely sixteen when I left home and began working for the King. I miss my family. It has been years since I was able to see them, yet I miss them like it was yesterday." Aynos said as she placed the tray in front of Erick. "Now, I have brought your morning tea for you lady Clifton. His highness is away this morning, but will join you this evening for supper."
Erick nodded again as he reached for the warm cup tea. It was mesmerising to watch the tendrils of heat lift off the cup and curl around his hands, bringing soothing warmth he had missed in the night. Taking a sip of the warm liquid Erick looked to Aynos. "Have you thought of visiting your family? I'm sure King Lionel would allow it if you requested it."
