'Anyone can dream through the night, but only some can dream with eyes wide. '
the wind blew his hair into his eyes after he spoke to the girl and he had to hurriedly push it back into place so he could see her reaction. she looked taken aback but recovered from her shock soon.
"thank you." her voice was strong, which was a contrast to her vulnerable looks.
"do you believe in signs?" he asked, before he could stop himself.
"what kind of signs?" her eyebrow was raised in a delicate arch.
"signs from the universe. telling you that something was meant to be."
"why should i?"
"because i believe that we were destined to meet." his lips curved up into a smile.
"do you use that cheesy pick-up line on all the girls you meet?" she accused, but her tone gave away the fact that she was intrigued.
"i don't meet many girls in an abandoned field in the middle of the night. which is why i think this is a sign. how many strangers have you met like this?"
"none." she confessed.
"why are you here anyway? couldn't sleep?" he noticed that the skin around her eyes was sunken in and her clothes were disheveled, which was the usual appearance of an insomniac.
"yes. you too?"
he nodded in response, not wanting to offer more information on the topic.
"well, it was nice to meet you, but i should be going." she turned to leave, clearly unwilling to speak to a stranger who was insisting that their meeting was a sign.
"won't you tell me your name before you go?"
she seemed to consider the consequences of doing so, but eventually decided to give him what we wanted, before striding away rapidly.
he said her name out loud, liking the way the syllables sounded and committing it to his memory.
he wished that she would be back soon, although it didn't seem like she had particularly enjoyed his company. he couldn't blame her for that, no one he knew seemed to either. his friends and family never understood his facsination with mythology and unscientific theories and a force that was greater than humanity.
it was a problem that he was a dreamer, because according to a few individuals, it was not acceptable for a man to be one. but no matter how hard people tried to change his nature, he continued to walk around with his head in the clouds, unable to deal with reality. this led to him finding solace in staying up all night, where the voices of doubt could not find him.
of course, there were a few other reasons for his night-time strolls, but he preferred not to linger on them, so he continued to disregard their existence until it was time to deal with them.
maybe it was true what they said, that he was a troubled soul, but when he had looked into that girl's eyes, he knew that he had found another one. even if she didn't believe it yet, a series of events that would change their lives had been set into motion that night, and he was ready for them.

Did anyone get a Ted Mosby-like vibe from him? That's what I was aiming for, though I have to warn you he isn't your typical hopeless romantic.
Dedicated to Kelsier, mostly to return the favor and also cause his birthday is coming up. :)
