xiv. diana and lei

"You?" I say incredulously.

Incredulously because—a. It's Lei, the kindest maid in our house, and b. She's carrying her only two duffel bags with her. A weak smile is on her face and I can't help but be happy, too.

"D-Diana," she stammers before falling on her knees. I yelp and get down to help her. I support her shoulders and shake her slightly to keep her awake.

"Lei? Lei! Talk to me!" I yell at her, caressing her cheek softly. What's wrong with her? "Wh-what happened? Are you alright?"

"Y-your pa—" she falters.

"My what?" I fear her answer.

"Your—your p-parents.. out t-to come fo-for you," she speaks shakily, as if something is wrong with her. Stupid. Something is wrong with her," I scold my inner self.

But what she'd just said shocks me. "My parents? They're out to come after me? What?" I concede. My heart is beating twice its normal pace and it seems like it's about to burst from my rib cage.

Lei gives a tiny nod. I notice that her breathing is short and uneven. "Don't worry, Lei. I'll take care of you," I say quietly just as her eyes close shut.

"What happened?" Lei coughs weakly as she rubs at her eyes. She's just awoken and I'm offering her a steaming cup of chamomile tea—my specialty. She gratefully accepts it with a small smile.

"Well, you came here, looking all weak and tired and you told me that my parents were after me and—"

"I did?" Lei asks me, lips parted.

I nod. "Yeah, you did. Why?"

Lei shakes her head as if she's just remembered something. "I don't know. Everything's all blurry. I don't remember telling you that."

I frown. "Really?"

"Yeah."

We stay silent for a moment. It's nice, staying quiet and all, because I need to relax my nerves, see, and this is just the right way to do it.

"So how'd you find me?" The question is blurted out of my mouth before I can even think about what I'm saying.

Lei looks up. "Hm?" she glazes. "Oh. Um, well, see, when you've left, aye, I decided that I'd follow you secretly and protect you. So, well, um, here I am." She lets out a nervous chuckle.

I smile at her. I'm grateful to have Lei as our maid and as one of my closest and greatest friends. Without her, I'd've been sulking right now, thinking madly about the stupid world I am in.

Lei suddenly lets out a gasp—a startled and shocked one. "Wh-what's that?" She points at my arm. I follow her gaze and notice the cuts. Shit

I quickly think. "Um, I was drinking a glass of milk yesterday but I dropped it and a glass shard teared into my arm—"

Lei's steely gaze cuts me off. "Don't lie to me, D. I know when you're lying and when you're not. Tell me the truth." A tone in her voice—something I can't name—tells me that I should tell her the truth.

I sighed, my bottom lip quivering. No, I can't cry right now. "I—I'd cut my wrists, Lei," a tear quickly rolls down my cheek and blobs on my chin and I sob. "And I—I enjoyed it."

"You what!?" Lei shrieks in complete disbelief. She's glowering at me and I coward. Lei gives the best daggers when it comes to glaring.

"I—I.." More tears roll down and I'm full-on sobbing. Great.

"Diana," Lei sighs, coming forward to engulf me in a warm and comforting hug. More tears roll down my cheeks and the hiccups are starting. I sob and snuggle into her arms, taking this time to let Lei comfort me. She's a really great friend.

"Don't cry, D," she coos, strokes my cheek, and rubs her hand up and down my back. I'm still hiccuping—as I have said, I always have bad cases of hiccups when I cry—but I bite down on my bottom lip to stop the sobbing.

"It's okay, everything's okay. Don't cry. I'm here, D. I'm here."

And I'm so glad that Lei's here to comfort me.

I wake up when I hear a wonderful smell wafting throughout the entire motel room. My nose twitches and my eyes shoot open. I sit up, rubbing at my eyes to get the sleep out of them.

"Good morning, D," Lei smiles at me from the mini-kitchen just a few feet away from the bed. I greet her with a smile, memories from yesterday flooding back.

"G'morning," I greet her as I stand up from the bed, swinging my legs over the side. A huge yawn takes over me and I use my hand to cover my mouth to keep my morning breath from reeking into my nose.

"What's for breakfast?" I ask eagerly as I walk into the tiny, cramped bathroom to wash my face. I look in the mirror and, thank god, my hair isn't a bird's nest. But it's still in tangles so I run a comb through it.

"Eggs and bacon," Lei calls out back from the kitchen. I smile to myself as I finish doing my stuff. Then, once I am done, I walk back into the half-bedroom-half-kitchen-half-living-room, where Lei's already setting down to plates of food on the tiny wooden table on the corner.

"That smells good. "I grin at her thankfully. Then a thought comes over me. "Where'd you get 'em?"

Lei motions for me to sit down. "Bought them from the convenience store. Most of 'em were spoiled and rotten, but good enough, there were fresh ones over there." She lets out a chuckle before shaking her head.

We eat, laughing and talking about everything, and I am totally grateful to have Lei with me. Frankie and Hazel are my best friends, but Lei, I think, is my best-est friend—if that's even a word. I smile at the thought.

"What's with the smile?" Lei teases.

"Nothing, nothing," I tell her, and we both laugh again for no reason whatsoever.

The sweetest comment I have received was from @huggle_bear_Zayn. No matter how short it was, it still made me smile. :) And the other comments made me smile, too, but I think this was the sweetest.

Anyway, next chapter will be posted soon. :) x [THIS IS UNEDITED]
