xvi. diana and the new friend

After Lei's finished washing the dishes and I've cleared up the table, we both decide to take a walk outisde to enjoy the sunny day. I grab my motel room's keys and I lock the door before we set out.

There's nothing outside of Motel 6, really, except for the gas station, the convenience store, a few houses, and an abandoned park. After that there's the practically nothing else, just the long road stretching. I could see the London skyline from here.

"Why don't we go to the park?" Lei suggests with a small smile and I nod my head. We trudge up to the park, dodging the racoon that scurried away. Climbing up the broken fence, a laugh leaves my lips as I stare at the playground.

We both sit at the swing set. I hold on the to the rusty chain and slowly start pumping my legs. I feel somebody looking at me and turn my head.

"What?" I ask Lei.

She shakes her head. "Nothing, I.. I've never seen you this happy before, y'know? It's like you—" she falters.

"Your parents.. they weren't exactly the best. I've noticed that. They're like zombies. If you need someone I'll be here for you, okay? Always. Treat me like a sister or a mother, I don't care. I'll be here for you. That's a promise."

I feel tears swimming in my eyes and I nod. "Thank you, Lei. Really." And then I smile at her.

After spending a few hours at the park just chatting and whatnot, we decide to head back because of my uncontrollable hunger. Yes, I'm always hungry and I don't think that's a problem.

As we head back to our room, a girl with blonde hair passes by us. Our eyes meet for a second and to me, they seem familiar. Have I seen her before..?

But the girl is gone, walking around the corner. "What's up?" Lei asks me, obviously noticing my discomfort.

"That girl.. I've seen her before," I concede while furrowing my eyebrows.

"Maybe she was a schoolmate of yours or something. It's nothing to worry about, isn't it?"

I shrug. "Maybe.." But I know that she's not just "somebody" from my school. When our eyes met, it's like we shared a connection. I could almost feel the sadness radiating from her. I hope she's fine, though.

As we go inside, we spent half an hour preparing lunch. I chop the vegetables and Lei prepares the pan. I'm not exactly a fan of vegetables and fruits but food is food.

We eat, talking over the table and laughing. Lei tells me this story on when she met this weird lunatic on an ice cream shop asking for a blowjob. It's disgusting—but it's also funny. I spend a full two minutes laughing over that one.

Once we're finished we wash the dishes and Lei announces that she's going to sleep. "This early?" I ask.

She nods and stifles a huge yawn. "Yeah, I'm tired." I can't exactly blame her because I practically worship the word sleep. Sleeping is my life.

I tell her that I'm just going to stay at the lobby and see what's on the news and she just nods, waves me off, and climbs into bed. I lock the door and don't bother bringing my keys with me since Lei is in the room.

My aztec-patterned Vans—which is one of my favorite pair of shoes—thud against the carpeted floors and I narrowly avoid a pile of what looks like vomit. I go downstairs and sit on the lobby. The woman—I forgot her name—isn't behind the desk but the telly is on.

I'm glad to see the news is on. I sit on the edge of the chair I'm sitting on in case it's infected with chair bugs or something.. who knows? Anyway, some boring article about the world's largest candy cane being made in Mumbai is on the news and I stifle a yawn.

I'm already nodding off when I hear something in the news that makes me be interested.

"Breaking news; daughter of two of the most rich people in London allegedly reported missing today. Hazel Grace, husband of Agustus Grace and mother of Diana, said, 'Who knows what that kid is doing? She's just having fun. This is her kind of fun,' to the police chief. Cops are now searching London and nearby areas for signs of Diana Grace."

I snap out of my haze and listen attentively to the news. My heart feels like it's going to swell in anger. Fine. Who cares anyway? Who cares about my stupid gold-digging parents? Ugh.

My face contorts in disgust and I stomp out of the lobby. I climb up the stairs and almost instantly crash into someone. I see it's the blonde girl from a while ago. Another wave of familiarity crashes over me but I simply can't put my finger over it.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry," I say to the girl while helping her up.

She sniffles, "No, no, it's okay, I swear." But she grabs my hand and stand up, anyway. I offer her a smile but she returns a small, meek one. I notice that her eyes are bloodshot.

"Hey, are you okay? I'm Diana," I tell her, still smiling at her.

"Uh, yeah, I'm f-fine," she says. "I'm Georgia Rose, by the way."

"Georgia Rose? Aww, that's a cute name."

Her eyes widen but she doesn't say anything. A few seconds pass in awkward silence until she speaks up again. "Hey, I, uh, I have to g-go. I've got these, um, errands to run. See you around." And then she was gone.

* * *

"Yeah, and then it was like she was crying or something. I don't know.." I trail off. Lei sits across me with a thoughtful look on her face.

"You think she should come with us?" she questions out of the blue. I'm surprised by the question and my eyes widen in response.

"What?" is my stupid reply.

"It feels like she needs a friend. What if she's going through the same stage as of you? What if she's depressed—"

"I am so not depressed," I snap at her, but deep inside it's true. I'm a depressed loser ignored by her stupid-as-fuck parents but I can't just admit it out loud.

"—and what if she's being chased by a pervert or something?" Lei sighs. "Can't you invite her over?" she asks.

I think of the idea. I think it's great. I really want to be friends with Georgia Rose. I really want to help her. Stupid how it sounds that I'm going to fix other people when I can't even fix myself.

"Sure," I say eagerly. "That sounds greeeeat."
