Wake up America it is time to wake up.
Despite your troubles you have caused, my people have dealt with
It all.
Silence is not a option and death is brought upon us all.
Sit back, tune out your devices, unplug your headphones, smell the coffee, feel the morning sun on your faces, and enjoy my company because I am going to be here for a while.
This year is 2017 but I will be rewinding you back to the past.
Where there was negro spirtituals in the air and greener grass.
Since I was born way back in the past you may refer to me as the motherland.
Where the cotton was thick and the desert was full of sand.
*rewinds back 400 years*:
As I placed my hands onto my apron. I became light headed due to stress as if I had to faint. My callus hands were as hard as bricks and my clothes were dirty. I viewed myself in the mirror while rubbing my hands on my face feeling my prominent features.
I did not dare pick up a pen or pencil,
knowing my punishment would be rather sturdy
When the amount of pounds I could carry over my back.
Determined the number of soft cotton in my sack.
Slaving in the hot fields with the dreadful sun,
doing forced labor that is no where near fun.
*rewinds forward to present*
Imagine hearing a silent voice being called from the beyond.
Wittnessing a loved one being shot by the color of his skin.
There is a zero percent chance I would be shot on sight.
just because me or you don't experience that doesn't mean we shouldn't respond.
As I glance around I ask myself is america awake.
Not half asleep or partially woke but rather an ache.
The amount of history of my people is too much to be taught.
That's why the teachers normally just talk about the " triangular slave trade".
Text books full of history, but yet they still state columbus discovered america,
How can you discover something were people was already at?
Wake up america it is time to wake up.
I am saying this loud and clear for the people in the back.
The color of my skin does not define me.
I am a fully woke feminist who believes in all rights
I will not be judged by the color of my skin.
