Chapter 5

Prince Frederic and Lord Alric stood beside Princess Berdotte as she sat on one of the stone benches that had been placed in the garden trying to get herself together. Her mind was still reeling from whatever had just happened. It was if she had linked to him. She could feel him as if he were a part of her. She could still feel him in her mind even though he wasn't touching her anymore and for some reason, even though it was so weird, it felt so right. She wanted him to touch her again to make her feel the strange emotions that had been so strong. She couldn't understand. She loved Alric she knew that much was true. Yet, here she was wanting the touch of another man.

Her brother, Prince Frederic watched as her color began to restore. He desperately wanted to ask her what had happened but he could see that she was not ready yet. He had seen her at the last with his new friend Walen and he wondered if his friend had done something to upset her. He couldn't imagine what he could have done and he knew his sister well enough to know that she was not being dramatic. Something had happened and she would tell him in her own time all he could do was wait. They never kept secrets from each other as they were very close and had always told each other their own hearts desire freely. Lord Alric on the other hand was a different story. Frederic could tell that he was upset but he knew that Alric wasn't going to get any answer until she was ready to talk.

"Please Berdotte, tell me what happened. Did that freak do anything to you? Did he hurt you? I have half a mind to go in and call him out. We'll see what he thinks when he faces cold steel. The coward! I'm going to go in there and drag him out. Challenge him right there before the King so he can't back down."

Lord Alric turned to leave but Berdotte's hand on his stopped him.

"Please Alric, sit here a moment with me and be quiet. Fighting with him isn't going to solve anything and no he didn't do anything to me."

Alric sat down beside her still grumbling under his breathe. She sat silent for a few minutes more then turned to him, "Alric would you please ask Ria and Malia to come here to me and please bring me a glass of wine. I think I could use one right now and I don't want to have to see all those staring people."

Alric got up quickly and bowed to her. Turning to leave he promised to be right back as soon as he found the girls and to bring several glasses of wine as well, he knew he could use one. Alric disappeared into the bushes and Frederic turned to his sister and waited patiently for her to speak.

"Frederic, I don't understand what happened. It was as if we shared feelings. I could feel him in my mind. It was so strange as if I knew him all my life. I asked him not to hurt Captain Dailin. I knew that if I hadn't said that he most certainly would have but I don't know how I knew."

She lapsed back into silence again and Frederic placed his hand on hers then hugged her.

"Yes," she whispered. "It was like that. Like I wanted him to hold me and never let go."

Frederic watched as a tear trickled down her cheek. He had never seen his sister cry before and now he was worried. " Sis, are you going to be alright?"

She laughed. It sounded hollow and forced but she managed to lessen her worry. She wiped the tear away and laughed again. "Just silly nonsense. I can't imagine what came over me."

She stiffened, "He's coming! Quick, Frederic, hide and don't let him see you. I wish to talk to him and I don't think he will talk if he sees you."

He looked at her and nodded and turned to leave. He stopped and looked back at her, "Sis, don't worry about Walen if Lord Alric wants to fight him. I think that he can handle a sword. We practiced a little in the armory this afternoon. Judging by his swordmanship he has handled his share of fighting." that said he turned and ran into the bushes and partway down a hidden trail far enough away to not be seen or heard but close enough to help her if she got into trouble.
