Author's note:

I found out after I had posted chapter 5 that Misskilljoy7 had dedicated chapter 2 of Different to me. That's awesome and inspiring. So as a thank you to her I'm asking that you check out her book. Also if you have already read chapter 5 and are reading this I ask that you go back and read the last two pages of 5. I found some major errors there and edited them and added some for (I hope) smoother reading. Enjoy!

Maniac out!

     Chapter 6

Berdotte saw the fear and agony in the narrow faced man's eyes. She had never been so close to death. Never had stood face to face with it. It was frightening. She was so scared she was almost pale as death herself. She heard the man Walen offering freedom to Rafe the other guard that had attacked her. She watched as Rafe started to run as fast as could toward the practice yards. He was almost there when Walen brushed his hand down the side of his breeches then drew back his arm. There was a brief gleam of metal and Walen's hand whipped forward. She watched horrified as the man Rafe suddenly tumbled headlong to the ground twitched a few times  then lay still.

Walen stood there until the man had expired. He turned and walked toward her. Fear coursed through her. Was he going to start where the others had left off? She struggled to get away from him but froze when he knelt beside her his knife flashing in the little light there was. The sight of cold steel frightened her even more. She thought that now he was surely  going to kill her.

There was a brief flicker of emotion in his eyes and she felt... Was it sorrow? Regret? It was gone as fast as it had appeared and all that remained was the blank coldness upon his face that was unreadable even what little emotion she felt disappeared as well. He turned her over and cut her hands free and untied the cloth they had used to gag her.  As soon as she was free she backed away from him trying to put as much distance between them. She saw that he made no move to follow her and stopped to get the other rag they had used out of her mouth. When she had managed to get the other rag out and could breathe again she turned and faced him angrily.

"How could you do that?! You promised him freedom!" she yelled. "You killed him in cold blood."

His cold eyes regarded her for a moment, "I merely saved him from a worse death. The man he spoke of would surely have killed him and none too easily. I also bought your father time. Much needed time. Go back to him and tell him to be prepared they will be coming."

"Who? Who is coming? What do you mean?"

She gasped. He had been standing just a few steps away from her but he moved so fast that he was now in front of her.  How did he move so fast? She had never seen anyone with that kind of speed before. She swallowed hard. His proximity to her made her nervous.

"It would be better if you never knew. Speak to your father and tell him to send you away on the black ship that is currently docked for repairs in his harbor. He will know and I think will agree that this would be the best measure. They will protect you. Give them this," he handed her a small ring set with a red ruby. "They will recognize it and will guard you with their lives."

As she reached up to take the ring their hands touched and once again that overpowering sensation took them both. She felt sorrow and regret coming from him along with a pressing weight of despair. His other hand touched her face and she heard him whisper, "Zi deastra wa Zi amorea." The feelings were replaced by a burning, stinging, mind-numbing pain which subsided  as Walen shoved her away from him. She knew he was hurt but she couldn't tell where or how he had been hurt.

"How sweet. Whispering sweet nothings in the ear of your lady love. Why don't you tell her everything? How about we start with how your a hired killer and have been paid to kill her father and brother who may even be dead now. Or how about how you posed as the Count's nephew fooling him into bringing you into the presence of the King to bring the blame on him. Let's see how much you whisper to her when you kill her in cold blood just like the guard. Why don't you tell her that your name isn't really Walen at all but Emberasi the assassin." The voice was cold and dry and the words ended with the speaker giving a soft chuckle as he spoke. She looked over Walen's shoulder and saw a dark shadow move out from behind a shrub and move toward them. What litlle light there was fell briefly across the man's face and again there was a gleam of metal. She gasped, the face was covered with a metal mask.

Walen/Ember shoved her further away from him. He reached down and picked up the sword that the narrow faced man had dropped when he had begun molesting the Princess. His silver, blood-red ringed eyes turned to her. "Run and do not look back. Go straight to your father and tell him to seal the castle doors. Let no one in and no one out. Now go!"

He turned to face the man before him and she saw that the white shirt he was wearing now had a dark patch on the left shoulder. The patch grew as she watched and she realized it was blood. He had been wounded, struck by a small dart or arrow that she now saw within the patch of red.

"You are hurt! You can't fight him!"

He turned and his eyes were glowing with the strange red light she had seen before but now it was so much more intense. "Go!" he said but it came out almost like a snarl.

Now she was frightened she saw that when he had opened his mouth that there were now sharp canine fangs that had not been there before. A strange coldness seemed to penetrate her and clutch at her heart. She could feel also through whatever it was that connected her to him that she was in real danger. She turned and fled toward the safety of the castle. The last sounds she heard was of swords and battle and when she looked back briefly she saw the two men, swords swirling about clashing, each seeking an opening. Frederic had been right Walen or whoever he was could handle a sword but so could this newcomer and she could tell by the link that Walen was weakening.
