I've heard that in America, after a large event, an after-party is held. There's usually the likes such as soju and beer. One would think the same would apply to a graduation party? But that does not flow at a private school in Seoul.
My fellow classmates and I were graduating from Seoul School of the Performing Arts. The long awaited three years of torture were over. We were currently all gathered in the school gym for the 'after-party'. Although I can't quite call it that. We were surrounded by teachers, parents, even the Chairman of the School Board!
The couples that had previously mingled about in the halls were keeping a safe-distance from each other due to school protocol. Parents were boasting about their child's or children's recent accomplishments in blah blah blah or bleh bleh bleh. I for one, felt like puking out my non-existent breakfast.
We'd already accepted our diplomas and what not, and I would have preferred to skip the graduation party. If it wasn't for my position as Student Council President of SOPA, I would be at home in my jumpsuit eating matcha ice cream and watching Korean night dramas.
"Suzy!" A voice breaks me out of my trance. I turn from my position at the gym door welcoming parents, and see my friend Sulli.
"Ye?" I plaster on a smile as she grabs onto my arm, pulling me away from my station.
"Seonsaengnim told me to bring you over backstage. It's almost time for your speech." She tells me as we walk across the gym, bowing at our elders as we pass.
"Ah, that's right! I almost forgot." I internally slap myself for my obliviousness.
"By the way, why do you look like you're going to a funeral?" Sulli asks me as we enter the stage door, giving me a once over.
I roll my eyes. I'd rolled up my sheer white blouse sleeves almost past my elbows. My midnight black slack dress hung loosely over it and my barely there curves. She's lucky I chose to wear black pumps! ...Eomma made me...
"Ye. I wouldn't want to steal the spotlight." I reply sarcastically, referring to Sulli's plunging V-neck red silk pantsuit and matching heels.
"Course you wouldn't." She tells me with a wink, as the school Headmaster begins his speech to the crowd. We were hidden behind the stage wings.
"Students, Teachers, and Parents, welcome to today's Graduation for these wonderful and lovely students." He begins, smiling. At least, I think he is?
"I didn't know a horse could talk." Sulli whispers to me, we giggle to ourselves.
"Yah, Jinyoung Oppa been sneaking glances at you since the party started." I whisper, gesturing to her on again off again beau.
"Please, as if I'd fall for his shenanigans again." She tells me, rolling her eyes in annoyance. But not before I catch her sneak a glance at him. "Hey, do you know if Gongbaeg's coming?"
"Who?" I raise a curious eyebrow.
"Don't play dumb with me." Sulli scolds me. "I mean your ex." I freeze up at her words.
"He's my ex for a reason Sulli." I inform her, trying to prevent my blood pressure from taking a drastic increase.
"Yeah, but the way you ended things with him, I would want some confirmation t--"
"Sulli!"
"Ye, ye. I'll shut up now." She mutters adjusting her hair while looking in a compact mirror. "Now if you'll excuse, my lips are craving some candy." She prances of the stage to the side, leaving me to suffer alone.
