I arrive at the Denpasar airport in Bali just before mid-night. The hotel sent a driver to get me and another tourist - an American in his twenties from DC.
"What brought you to Bali?" I ask in my thick Chinese accent, which startled myself even. (I'd forgotten how to speak English after 2 months of China).
"Ah, I've come to surf and scuba dive. What about you?"
"I've come to see Ketut Liyer, you know the palm reader from Eat Pray Love?"
"Oh...", he said, followed by a long pause.
This man's face went through the most remarkable series of changes. He tried his best to smile, but didn't do a very good job of it, for he still couldn't wipe off the look of shock from his face.
When most people come to Bali to surf and scuba dive or swim with the dolphins or take pictures with giant sea turtles, the fact that I've flown thousands of miles to see a palm reader who's going to tell me what I should do with my life, seems a tad much to be sharing with a perfect stranger. Maybe I should keep that to myself next time I meet someone.
