I walked down the street during the pouring rain of October. The streets were humid and dense of water. People fled inside before the downpour came, I didn't. I simply smiled at the way the rain drops fell on my Converse. The thunder clapped loudly, I shook away the thought of being scared.
The whole sky lit up with wonders and dreams. I wonder, 'Is this how I will end?' The rain only seemed to pour down slower as I let out a huff, numbness dulling my brain.
My feet carried me to a neighborhood, a nice one at that. My poor body hasn't slept in a proper bed in a while. I saw little boys and girls playing out in the rain, parents or older siblings watching them. I didn't need watching, for I was free of supervision. That's how I liked it.
"Oi, you there, you alright?" A male voice rang out. I began to walk faster, not wanting to be noticed. "Hey, I'm talking to ya!" The man shouts again, standing up from his porch, following me.
"Would you be so kind to get away from me?" I began walking backwards, horrified from this man. He got closer, so I noticed his appearance. His hair was dark brown, tan skin being showed off by a tank top, tattoos that probably mean something, long legs that could out run me, dark brown eyes that seemed homey, and a bottom lip that could suffocate me.
"No can do, you are tired and pretty hungry by the look of it," he came closer as I stopped in my tracks.
"Fine, but I'll leave when the rain let's up," I give in, too tired to keep on fighting.
"You can clean up and rest, get something in your belly," he lightly took my hand.
"Fine, what's your name?" I ask as he leads me to his house, a nice one that looks big enough for a family of four.
"Calum, and yours is?" Calum asks as he helps me up the porch steps.
"Its Emberlynn, but you can call me Ember," I respond, knowing I'll never see this man again.
"Okie dokie Ember, come on in. My sisters home right now but she'll be fine. You can borrow some of her clothes after you clean up," Calum offers, I nod and stay quiet. Walking in was amazing, from the hard wood floors to the light accents along the dark house. It was like a whole new world.
"Calum, I was just about to join yo- Calum who the hell is she?" Calum's sister demands, but she was pretty, very pretty at that. Who am I fooling? She's gorgeous.
"Mali, this is Ember. Ember this is Mali," Calum smiles.
"Hi Mali," I shy behind Calum, even though she looks nice, she might not be.
"Hello Ember, where did you come from?" Calum moves out of the way, Mali bends down to my height, ruffling my hair.
"The streets," I shy away again, not liking the way she was just so close.
"Oh, you'll be staying here in our care then?" Mali asks.
"Just one night," I shrug.
"You know you can stay as long as you want too right? If you leave and decide to come back, you're always welcome here," Mali smiles.
"Oh, I probably won't come back, I like to stay on the streets," I convince her.
"Okay, we'll look out for you," Mali grins as Calum comes over with a plate, a sandwich and a bag of ships beside it.
"Here you go, if you need more, tell me aight?" Calum hands me the plate, I take it and head to the barstool area. I began taking small bites, then realizing that I was hungry, I scarffed it down. "Hehe hungry huh?" Calum pats my back, laughing.
"Its good, really," I say after I swallow.
"Okay then, once you're finished I'll show you to the bathroom so you can get showered up and get a good nights sleep," Calum continues to rub my back affectionately. I nod in response as I finish up my food.
"Where do I put this?" I shyly ask as I turn around, since he's standing right there, I blush in frustration.
"Oh just hand it to me, I'll take care of it," Calum smiles as he takes my empty plate and points to what I guess is the bathroom. I enter, seeing the tub-shower behind a semi-clear curtain. I wait silently on the counter for Calum or Mali to bring me clothes.
"I hope you don't mind wearing shorts and a t-shirt, since these are too small for Mali its all we have," Calum places the clothes on the counter for me.
"Thanks Calum, tell Mali I said thank you," I smiled as he left, closing the door. Smiling, I turned on the warm water for my shower, kinda thankful for Calum's homey feeling he gives me.
A knock on my door sounds, "I have a friend over, don't walk out buck-naked okay?"
"Okay, I wasn't planning on it," I let out a small chuckle as I lock the door, stripping down to take my shower.
