Odeletta
Raylen is dressed in jeans and a black long sleeve shirt and black vans, his dirty blonde hair combed. Noemie is in a long sleeve army green dress, leggings with small flowers on it, and white sandals. She has a headband in her dark hair. I'm wearing my usually black jeans, a white long sleeve shirt, and white vans. I didn't bring the leather jacket. It's packed away in the suitcase. All of our things are in the car. We stand by the entrance, Noemie in my arms. Raylen's small hand is clutched tightly in mine, his thumb in his mouth as we wait.
I keep checking my phone.
"When is he coming?" Raylen whines.
My phone vibrates with a test from his nurse.
Coming out of the elevator
A moment later, the elevator dings.
Nathan walks off with the nurse, and he looks excellent, like nothing even happened. He's wearing jeans, his black vans, a black t-shirt, and his blonde hair is damp. He probably showered before he got off the elevator. His muscles are straining against the t-shirt. His right hand is in his pocket and his right hand is looking down at Raylen's motorcycle. There's a bag slung over his left shoulder.
Raylen is bouncing up and down in excitement. The nurse smiles when she sees us. Nathan glances up for just a second to make sure he's going the right way, and then he does a double take, stopping in his tracks. His eyes are trained on my face, and then Noemie, and then Raylen.
Is he going to get mad that we didn't go to Ohio? I've been so scared that he's going to be pissed I lied to him.
What if he just walks right out the door?
He runs his fingers through his hair and then crosses the room in four strides, stopping to stand right in front of us.
Noemie looks at him and starts crying loudly, reaching her cubby little hands out to him. He looks taken aback as he pulls her into his arms, a teary smile on his face. He kisses her head and reaches down to scoop up Raylen, who starts crying too, and I swallow the lump in my throat and blink back tears, watching the giant grin on Nathan's face as he hugs the kids and kisses their cheeks. After a moment his eyes land on me. I shuffle anxiously in front of me. He sets Raylen down and hands Noemie to the nurse and turns to me.
Is he going to cuss me out?
He lunges at me then, pulling me into a bone crushing hug. His grip around my body knocks the wind out of me. I lock my arms around his neck and feel him reach down and yank me into his arms. I pull away, opening my mouth to protest.
"I'm fine." He says. "I'm okay." He crushes me back against him and tears flow from my eyes and into his black t-shirt. He clings to me like this life depends on it. He pulls back after a moment, tears in his eyes. He leans in and kisses me slowly, passionately, but he only lets it last a few seconds and then pulls away, setting me on my feet. He wipes my tears and smiles, but a moment later, he frowns. "You have been lying to me Odeletta Reed."
My mouth opens and closes a few times.
"How did you know?"
He wipes his own eyes and pulls a piece of white paper from his pocket and hands it to me. The note I wrote him. I frown, looking up at him.
"The ink was wet, amour."
I unfold the note and see the ink smudge. My eyebrows crease and I look back up at him.
I open my mouth to question him but he puts his hand up.
"I want to get the hell out of this country."
