OKAY BUT LOOK AT WINSTON ON THE SIDE
_____
My sneakers clap against the pavement as I cross the parking lot, walking into PetSmart. Winston nipples on my thumb adorably as I look around.
Where is the dogs section?
How do you even own a dog?
I search for the sign that says Dog or Puppy.
I spot one that says Dogs and I wander over to it, clutching. The pup in my hands when a giant murderous looking dog passes.
When I reach the dog section, I frown.
This isn't dog supplies, this is live dogs.
I spin on my heel, looking for some checklist or a sign that say where to go.
Why is this so confusing?
I wander down some aisle, and I find a worker. She looks to be a few years younger than me, blonde hair to her waist and green eyes.
"Uh, can you help me?" I ask. She turns around and her eyes widen.
"Who is this little guy?" She giggles and reaches out to pet him.
"Winston." I grin. "He's cute, isn't he?"
"He is." She nods. "What can I help you with?" She looks at me and her eyes widen again.
"I don't know how to own a dog. What do I buy?"
She smiles.
"Well...do you have anything?"
I shake my head. She smiles. "Let's get you a cart."
She walks off and I follow her. She grabs a cart and pushes it for me.
"Let's see...you need something to keep him in while you aren't home, that way he doesn't chew anything."
"He's going to chew things?" I ask. She looks at me.
"He's a puppy."
"So?"
"Think of a baby. You know they chew things, right?"
"Yes." I say.
Of course I know they chew things. I have two children.
"Puppies do the same thing."
"Interesting." I say. She walks over to the cages.
"Now he's a baby now but he's going to get big. So you need a bigger crate." She gestures to the big ones. I study them.
"These are huge. He's the size of my arm."
"Yes, but he's going to get big." She says.
I hand Winston to her and pick up one of the cages. It's heavy, and I can feel her eyes on me as I toss the crate under the cart.
