A sharp tone ripped me from my sleep, my body eyes snapping open as a dreadful tone droned on and on in my ears. I struggled to sit up, shifting my body to plant my feet onto the carpet floor, my hands on the edge of the bed, which croaked and groaned with every movement. I sat there for a minute, not wanting to get up, to just fall back down onto the pillow and doze off. Shame; I wanted to sleep in today.
I hoisted myself up finally, slowly walking over to the cupboard where I left my scroll, shaking and vibrating on the marble counter. I sighed and picked it up and opened the interface, to see it was a call from my boss. I groaned, thinking what could this old bastard want at four AM.
"Hello, Ozpin. What do you need?" I answered, annoyed at this sudden interruption of my sleep.
"It's Glynda Goodwitch, Mr. Wilde. I'm calling because Ozpin needed you to head to his office first thing you wake up in the morning. It's about your next job." Her voice sharply rang through my ears as she abruptly hung up, leaving me to my devices. I snarled to myself, annoyed with the turn of events out to ruin a perfectly normal day. I opened up a cabinet which revealed a selection of dry cereal and other parts of an unbalanced breakfast. I got some milk and mixed the two parts in a bowl, before promptly digging into the unsatisfying meal. I tossed the bowl into the sink, and I walked towards the bathroom to take a shower, and took mind of how low I was on soap and shampoo. Would probably help if I had a somewhat stable job. I turned the stiff knobs of the shower and the pipes moaned to life, the shower head sporadically shooting hot water until a moment later, a consistent stream spitting out. I walked inside, inviting myself to the water's warm embrace.
The streams of water beat itself onto my skin, against my arms, decorated with ink and markings alike. I lathered my hair and my body in soap and shampoo, before washing it all away in the current.
Stepping out of the shower, I wrapped a towel around my waist, before walking out of the bathroom and back into the main room. I picked up a half-empty bottle of whiskey off the floor, throwing it into the trash can, shattering in the can. Even so, the stench of alcohol pervaded the room, at which point my nostrils were already burnt. No matter what room service did, it always felt the same; a rusted joint bout to break. I snagged my work clothes and a small flask before walking out to see what my boss was up to.
The school year hasn't started yet, so the building felt rather eerie in the morning. There was no chittering of students or fights to break up. There was just silence, which was a benefit in its own right. I traversed down the halls of dorms until I came across the girl who dared to call me this hour.
She was a tall woman of a medium age, maybe thirty or some shit like that. She had light blonde hair, and gleaming green eyes that looked at me with disdain. Her dress had a keyhole on her neckline, and her purple-black cap seemed to be designed to imitate tendrils of flame. She had a small pencil skirt with brown stockings and bronze heels. In her hands was a small riding crop, gently hitting her open palm in impatience.
"Glynda Goodwitch; just the person I wanted to see this fine morning. Now what do you want?" I glared at her, waiting with growing impatience for an answer or perhaps an explanation. She scowled, looking at me with a mix of disdain and disgust, before shaking her head.
"Like I informed you when I called you this morning, there is a new job for you from Professor Ozpin. That's all I am allowed to say at the moment."
"Well, where is the old bastard at?" I asked her gruffly, raising a brow at her, as she didn't necessarily respond, instead just walking into the elevator. After a moment of silence, standing there, I walked into the elevator with her, when which she pressed the button to the top floor; all the way to the office of the headmaster.
The elevator jerked to a stop at the top of the tower, and the doors opened to the rather opulent office at what some would call the top of the world. Every time I came to this place, it always felt a little taller and taller, as if my mind often played tricks on me. Hell, maybe it was designed that way; in that case, props to the architects.
However, the office itself was although fanciful, it was quite simple in its entirety. There were two chairs on the inner side of the room, facing a large desk which on the other side, sat my current employer, Professor Ozpin of Beacon Academy. He was a tall man with sharp facial features to match, and his gray-silver hair was kept in an organized chaos. He had small glasses and a small cross pin on his neck, which adorned his green vest just peeking over his black suit. He looked to me with a humble contentment, and nodded.
"Ah, Jaeger Wilde; fashionably late as usual. Please go ahead and take a seat." He gestured with his hand towards one of the vacant chairs, as I slowly took a seat as he obligated.
"Okay, Ozpin. What is it you need?" I stared at him, while he relaxed a tone, taking a breath in before responding to my interrogation.
"Well, fortunately for you, I have another job for you to take, and hopefully, you won't grow as easily bored as you did last time." He smiled with soft amusement.
"Thank god. I've been bored out of my mind in that shitty dorm of yours." I sighed in relief, as Ozpin kept up his rather indifferent smile, like when a parent smiles when you do something retarded. "However, if i might ask, what is the specifics of this job?"
"Making a long story short, there is this international criminal who has recently moved into Vale territory from Atlas a couple of years ago, and he has been quite the problem." He explained with blunt precision.
"Ooh, think this guy might give me some problems? Unlike so many, 'Problems,' who turned out to be nothing but pushovers." I smirked at him, wearing my pride like a belt of ears. Before Ozpin could open his mouth to respond, Glynda stepped up to the side and spoke out.
"The main issue is that we are attempting to divert all of our manpower to finding out whoever attacked the Fall Maiden, but the problems made by this scoundrel are making this more than difficult."
"Shoot, I'll do it. Consider it done, Oz. But, I have to ask, what's the pay gonna be?" I tilted my head, anxious for the answer; cash was hard pressed at the moment.
"For this job in particular, it'll likely be a couple million lien, if it's done according to your recent successful streak."
"Damn, now that's something that I can get behind," I said, rising from my chair with a greedy, toothed grin.
"Before you get excited, there are a few things that you should know about the target involved." At this I grew somewhat excited. Maybe this would be a rather competent challenge after all.
"Ooh. Sounds promising." Ozpin nodded in response, handing over a bundle of files kept packed into a folder. I grabbed the cold files, which seemed to be only cobbled together by the cover and staples as well as rubber bands.
"Guessing this is his file, so to speak."
"Yes, this is what we could gather based on public information about him in Atlas as well as Vale. Everything from criminal records to petty rumor." I began to open the file, humming to myself as I made an attempt to gather some valuable information about the target. Something to help me track him down to the tee.
His name was Geist Resiende. According to the criminal files in Atlas, he was charged with theft of government property, murder, and conspiring against the Atlesian government. There were worse charges, I shrugged in indifference. There was one photo of him, which unfortunately was a mugshot from over three years ago. He had long dark grey hair and blue eyes, and his sharp facial features highlighted his rather slender appearance. Though there was one peculiar aspect about him. He was pale as fuck. Almost akin to a Schnee family member, he looked like the color had been ripped out of him. However, he didn't really seem to be much of a challenge, so what is this guy to Ozpin?
"Ozpin; quick question. How dangerous would you classify this guy as?" I looked up to him, as he sat up straight and formal.
"We don't necessarily know from first-hand experience how to answer that question. Whenever we try to send other huntsmen and huntresses to track him down, he always finds himself to be the elusive one."
"Elusive, you say? Well, consider it done, Ozpin." I nodded and began to walk out, before he and Glynda stopped me. I stared at them both when they told me to sit back down, but I complied with their requests.
"We are terribly sorry to keep you, but we should inform you that this Resiende has murderous intent on one of our future students, who of which you have close relations to." Ozpin clasped his hands together and sighed in concern.
Knowing who he was referring to, I scowled in anger and squinted at him.
"And how would you be able to get this information?" I glinted with anger, whether he was spying on me or just purely speculating, it was room and cause for assumption.
"I have my sources as you would know. Plus, it isn't that hard to notice a man in love, after so many years of watching people come and go." He smiled faintly, standing up to look upon his castle. I nodded. If anything, barring the bountiful profit, it would be great to make sure this predator would not harm those I've grown so close to.
"I believe I've made it quite clear to you that I plan to take the job, Ozpin. I don't need any more reason to, but I appreciate the information." I stated.
"Thank you. Hopefully, catching this man may give us time and resources to focus on other matters, and if he's in any way related to the attack of the Fall Maiden, that will make things all the better." Ozpin then turned away dismissively, in which I began to take my leave, standing up to stroll to the elevator.
Pressing the buttons, the doors closed and I was left alone, thinking to myself. If this guy was really after her, then I must do whatever I can to kill him. I won't give him that chance, and I won't allow him to take another step with the malicious intent of hurting who I love.
All there was to do now, was start a hunt.
