Ch-10:  Harold And Garret: Part 2

We had been walking from the motel for some time and had finally stopped. But we still weren't out of this so-called neighbourhood. There were casinos, clubs, buildings and houses on this street.

As soon as we stopped, I finally said aloud what I'd been wanting to say for a long time during the walk.

"Okay, Jake," I said seriously. He looked at me curiously. From the corner of my eye, I could see Suzie also paying attention to me.

"Whom were you talking to?" I asked suspiciously.

"I told you. They'd got the wrong name," he replied casually.

I narrowed my eyes at him.

"Jake is not a liar!" Suzie screamed.

I turned my head towards her. "Are you sure?"

"Yeah! He is nothing like you!"

It was evening now. The sun was going to set. The skies were a beautiful colour of orange, red and pink.

I glared at Suzie, then at Jake. He took a step backwards.

"Just spill it out, Jake!" I finally shouted.

"Hey, don't blame my brother for anything!" You are the only one who always lies. You lied to us about your running away and...." Suzie butted in.

"And what!?" I demanded.

Suzie was quiet.

"See, I didn't lie about anything else!"

"But Jake would never lie to me at least. He always tells me the truth. If he said that it was just a stranger, that means it was!"

"Why don't you ask Jake for yourself," I finally said sighing.

Susie looked at Jake, but his eyes were fixed on me with surprise.

"Jake would never...." Susie was saying, but I cut her short," Jake has never done this, Jake has never done that'. Well, Jake has! The two men who'd killed your parents had only called up in the motel! And Jake knew that! He still didn't say anything and lied to us!"

Susie looked at Jake with utter shock.

"Well, I......I w...." Jake stammered.

"How did the two men know that we were at the motel?" Susie choked the words out as tears filled her eyes.

"There's something known as following. Harold and Garret were parked right outside the mote," I answered before Jake could say anything.

He looked at me, astonished. "How did you..."

"Okay, I was listening to your talks," I confessed. "The phone that you were talking in and another phone in the reception were connected."

"J-Jake?" Susie said softly.

"I was just trying to protect you. I....I didn't want you guys to worry. I-I didn't want...." suddenly he turned towards me. "I didn't want Caroline to be a part of our problem!" he shouted.

"Why do you care!?" I screamed back.

"I don't care! I don't."

"Then!?" there were burning tears inside me.

"You don't care about anyone's feelings, princess. You just care about yourself. Just say things without thinking."

"Don't you dare call me 'Princess'," I said through gritted teeth.
