The Light

5 1 1

I run, I scream, I hope I dream

Up ahead a light, white light, it gleams

He leans in and tells me that

No matter how far, how long, just forget.

No matter how I persist to reach, that light of yonder bliss

It will end in tears and fears come true.

I can’t see him but I know he’s there

I feel his presence everywhere

He comes to me and chokes me,

The night is closing in around me

He closes in, all hopes are lost!

All dreams, all wishes all desires

He throws them away.

All but the light, the light of day.

The light of He who comes to save

Little at first, it seems so far away.

I know that He, the prince has come.

He will not lead me astray,

He will stay with me all the way.

Though I tumble, though I fall

He has strength to guide me still.

He who shines for me as the light of day,

He will stay with me all the way.

He will stay till the deed is done

And on that fateful day, I’ve won.

In that glorious hour I breathe away,

The power of darkness that is sin

The power of darkness that is he,

the prince of hell and all that’s lost.

I draw my last breath, not on my own.

But through His grace He has bestowed.

Now my battle, of life, is done

Is that my home towards which I run?

Is that my home that now I see,

And all my life I’ve searched for

Hoped for, dreamed for, run for?

I approach the gate tall and gleaming.

And on the top see: a soldier beaming.

He tells me of my Savior’s love

And of the life I’ll live above

He asked me if I wish to enter

and saying yes, he warns me

“Hitherto” he says aloud.

“Hitherto your companions have been:

complacency, sloth, and pride.

These three stand before me near you

And they wish to enter with you.

They did not accept the savior’s love

Each has the chance each hear the word.

But none really sought the Lord’s grace.”

I enter in the golden gates

I feel His love, I see His grace

He welcomes me with open arms

And tells me all is well and done.

My duty on the earth is done.

And into perfect rest I’ve come
