Chapter Eight
Haylee Parker
I tugged at the collar of the dress and cleared my throat.
My God, this sh*t is itchy.
"Mum," I breathed. "I hate this dress." I declared and began to reach behind my back and unzip the atrocious pink fabric.
I was not going to wear this to the Library Fundraising. My seventeen years of existence wouldn't allow it. Plus I may or may not have cared a little about Titan's reaction when he saw me.
"That's it Haylee Ann Parker. You can go ahead and pick what you want to wear. I simply cannot force you to identify with high fashion. Not when I -the expert- spent a couple of years designing for Dolce and Gabbana along with Yves Saint Laurent in my heyday..." my mother grumbled and reached for the flute of wine she was offered by one of the staff.
I internally rolled my eyes and went back into the changing rooms. There was no week that passed without my mother mentioning her glorious model past and how she was a tornado in the fashion world. She had to remind me of her success and how perfect she was...even now.
I shrugged off the pink frilly disaster and slipped into the satin changing gown before walking out of the changing rooms. Turns out that wasn't a great idea as I ran straight into Madison bloody Richards.
Breathe Haylee. Even Christ had a few encounters with the devil. Look at him today, over a billion followers and a bloody legend. Just breathe.
"Hey Hay! See what I did there? Hey? Hay?" she giggled and I rolled my eyes.
I smiled politely in return and glanced down at her had. They were full of crimson red dresses. Most of the dresses had elaborate cut outs and plunging necklines.
As much as I hated to admit it, she would look bloody gorgeous and if I wasn't careful I'd look like a failed soufflé.
"Shopping as well I see? I smiled.
"Yeah, I realized that I need to make the extra effort for my date tonight." She winked.
My blood ran cold. She was seriously going with Titan tonight. She smirked at my sudden stiffness and I shook my head.
"I totally understand, I can't wait to see Elliot's jaw hit the floor tonight when he sees me tonight." I challenged.
I saw the competitive spirit ignite in her eyes as she bid me goodbye and said she'd see me later. I walked toward the numerous racks of dresses and called for an assistant.
"Show me your most amazing red dresses. Don't hold back. I want the best." I said confidently.
Oh, I was playing dirty.

I sat in the plush leather chair and smiled at the hairstylist. She had done an amazing job with my hair. The soft ends brushed against my neck and I smiled. I felt beautiful and what better time to try out a new hairstyle than tonight. I ran my fingers through my hair one more time and giggled. It was perfect.
I stood up and walked to the lobby where my mother was on her phone typing very furiously.
"What do you think mum?" I smiled.
She looked up at me and I slowly saw the admiration fill her eyes. She stood up and walked towards me taking her time to run her fingers through my now short black hair.
"Oh sweetie I love it!" she declared and hugged me. "You look so beautiful!"
I blushed and hugged her back. My mother rarely agreed on anything that didn't involve hair and I absolutely loved her feedback about my hair.
"Along with the dress you bought tonight you'll look like a star. I'll even let you borrow my Louboutin's." She winked.
She grabbed her purse and we walked out of the salon with our sunglasses perched on our noses. I felt my heart skip when I entered her Mercedes-Maybach. I was going to look great tonight and Madison Richard's could eat her vile heart out.
~~~~~~~~~~~
I glanced at my reflection in the mirror and turned.
Oh hell yeah.
The long-sleeved crimson dress hugged my torso and flared out at my waist stopping at the middle of my thighs. It had an open back that had a simple gold chain running vertically down my spine. My elaborate makeup accentuated my grey eyes and my lips were painted the same shade of red as my dress. The black high heels that were on my feet made my legs look long and sculpted.
I felt absolutely glamorous.
I grabbed the gold sequined clutch bag resting on my bed and threw in a tube of lipstick, mascara, pocket tissues and my phone. I was ready.
I descended the stair case and heard Elliot chatting animatedly with my mum. Making my way towards the kitchen, I took a deep breath and cleared my throat.
"I'm ready." I smiled.
Elliot turned to look at me and his eyebrows rose significantly. He looked dashing in his three piece black suit and skinny black tie.
"You look amazing, Haylee." He said and let out a low whistle which made me blush and my mum frown.
"Manners boy." She chided and grabbed her fluffy champagne scarf that she draped around her neck lavishly.
"Shall we?" she smiled and sashayed out of the kitchen.
She was attending the Fundraising on behalf of my dad and one of his work colleagues was accompanying her.
The car ride to the library was short and filled with chatter. My mum narrated stories on how she and my dad used to dress up for such events and felt so grown. Apparently she saw much of herself and my dad in me and Elliot. I ignored the feeling of guilt that rose in my throat. I had dressed like this to grab Titan's attention and the fact that my boyfriend looks so proud and content made me feel bad for my intentions.
Elliot reached for my hand and squeezed it gently.
"We're here Haylee. Let's go."
My mother left the car first and was immediately greeted by Gabriel Matthews, her date for the night. He escorted her inside just as Elliot and I exited the vehicle. I smiled as I got out and looked up at Elliot.
"I feel like the luckiest guy in town tonight." He murmured and kissed my lips, careful not to smudge my lipstick.
I blushed and looked away, only to see Titan Glory look embarrassed and somewhat upset that he was watching Elliot and me. He was dressed in a deep blue two piece suit with a skinny navy blue tie. He looked yummy. Reaching for Madison's hand he led her inside without much of a hello.
Elliot held out his hand and I hooked mine through it. We walked up the stairs towards the lively hall and I couldn't help but feel some level of excitement about tonight. Something was about to happen, I just didn't know what.
