---------------
With one last look at the clock, I let out a sigh of relief to finally be out of this hellhole. I'd never of thought that I would be a waitress at a well-known restaurant, The Ladle, but I have to start saving money now if I wanted to attend the college I wanted in a year. Just as I put my stained apron on the hook, I heard the bell over the door jingle, signaling the arrival of more customers.
"Bethany, put that thing back on, we have the whole hockey team out there!" My boss yelled at me from the kitchen door, leaving to entertain the guests.
I couldn't help but roll my eyes. It was 11 o'clock at night, who goes out to eat this late anyway? Not only did I have school tomorrow, but I still had homework to finish tonight, and there was no way I wouldn't finish it. With a rather dramatic sigh, I put my apron back on and made my way to the front.
As I made my way to the long, makeshift table, all I could think was 'this is a lot of guys'. There had to be at least thirty around my age, and I recognized a few from school, though none of them actually caught my eye. There had never been anyone in school that I thought was in any way compatible with me. Yeah some were attractive, but looks don't mean anything, that I know from experience. At the table, everyone was looking through the menus, arguing over what to order. After taking their drinks, I walked over to the fountain to fill up the pitchers with soda. But, of course, one of my coworkers had mopped the floor already, meaning it was wet. I was falling before I knew what was happening, and my butt hit the floor, hard. I could hear the laughter behind me and could feel the embarrassment flood through me, coloring my cheeks. I was rooted to the spot, unable to move, when someone walked up to me, extending his hand.
"Here, take my hand," he said in a deep voice that I slightly recognized.
I reached for his hand and he cupped his own around mine, pulling me to my feet. I looked down instantly, still embarrassed from everyone seeing me fall, but one of the boys fingers pressed under my chin, lifting my head.
"Don't be embarrassed, only the best people fall down sometimes," he gave me a lopsided grin that made him look very attractive, which automatically made me nervous.
"Umm.. Well thanks for helping me up...." I trailed off, hoping he caught my hint of giving me his name. He did.
He chuckled a bit, obviously amused be something. When he saw my narrowed eyes, he finally explained. "You really don't know me, do you?"
Oh no, this was definitely going to be awkward. "Should I?" I asked, hoping he didn't get offended.
"Yeah you should. Ms. Rolly? Sixth period? We have the same English class." He said, and everything clicked. That's why he looked so familiar, he sat in the row across me in my Honors English class.
"Oh yeah! I'm so sorry, it's been a long night. Nathan right? Nathan Evans?"
"Finally! I knew you'd remember me," he winked, nudging my shoulder. "And you're Bethany Hayes, that I know."
Weird, nobody ever noticed me before. Maybe he just knows me for my teacher calling me out for my "perfect grades". With these thought running through my head, I caught him staring at me, making me fidget. I'd never had a guy this hot giving me attention, and I didn't know how to handle it. From his medium, dark brown hair that was tousled the right way and his light green eyes that I always thought were blue. And he obviously was on the hockey team, and it was definitely paying off. I could see the definition in his arms through his shirt and reflected in his light olive toned skin. I think he realized that I was admiring him, because when my eyes finally made it back to his, they were filled with amusement. I could feel my blush coming on once again, and started to stammer out a response, only I forgot what he just said.
"Well my shifts almost over so..."
"Okay, well I'll see you tomorrow, and I better get some conversation from you," he joked.
"Be quiet, I talk," I said, defending myself.
"Uh huh, sure you do," he said, rolling his eyes. "See you tomorrow Beth." And with a last smile, he walked back to his table, leaving me confused at what just happened.
That night as I lay in bed at 2 am, after getting off work, coming home, showering, and finishing my homework, I finally had nothing to distract myself from Nathan. First, he was the only one to actually help me up after my fall, but that wasn't the thing that got me. This boy actually noticed me. I didn't know why yet, but tomorrow I was definitely going to find out.
