The day back to school after a Christmas break is always hard, having to wake up so many hours earlier than you have been. But you also got to show off the presents you got, which was why I was dressed in my new sweater dress and knee high boots, on my way to pick up Taelor and Merlinda. They both only lived a couple of streets away so it didn't take long before we were on our way to the new bakery that opened up by the school. We pulled up to The Vanilla Bean silently, not ready to use our voices just yet and made our way inside. As soon as we were through the doors, I knew this would be a place we would come to often. It was perfectly warm and it smelled like a heavenly mix of coffee and pastries that made my mouth water, Starbucks could never be better than this. As we stood in the short line and looked over the menu, I could see the woman manning the counter, seeming to be the only one there. When we came up to counter, I could tell she was tired, but her eyes were bright, telling me that she loved what she did. I also realized that she was beautiful, bright blue eyes and skin a dark tan that was a change from the mundane pale of Minnesota.
"Hi girls, what can I get for you?" She asked with a kind smile, pushing the fly aways back that fell out of her ponytail.
We told her our orders, mine being a blueberry scone and a green tea Taelor's a honey bun with a hot chocolate, and Merlinda's a cherry Danish with a cinnamon frap, even though she was allergic to cinnamon she still loved it.
As she was getting our orders together, we stood silently until Taelor pointed out a flyer taped to the display case. "Hey Beth look, it says they're hiring. You've been wanting a new job right? She asked me.
It was true, I didn't really like the feeling of working in a big restaurant anymore, and the cozy atmosphere here was more than appealing. I nodded to Taelor as the woman came back with our breakfast to ring us up. As I gave her my money I asked her about the job.
"Yes we definitely could use the help, only two of us here right now. My name's Caroline by the way. Do you have any experience?" She asked me.
"I'm Bethany, and I do work in a restaurant right now. I actually put my two weeks notice in about a week ago so I could start working as soon as possible," I smiled sweetly, I really wanted this job.
"Then there's no interview needed! You seem like a good worker. Would you be able to come by today to learn the basics?"
"Wait.. So I'm hired?" I couldn't believe it.
"If today goes well the of course!" She exclaimed.
"Wow, thank you so much! Is four-thirty okay for you?" I asked her.
After she nodded and told me she would see me later, I joined my friends in the car who were already halfway done with their food.
"Does someone have a new job?" Merlinda asked around a mouthful of food.
"Someone does," I said, smiling as I put the car in drive. "She's incredibly nice, I think I'll like it there."
They smiled at me and by the time I had pulled into my parking spot we had finished out pastries and were almost done with our drinks. Yeah, I really wasn't going to mind working there.
I made to go and open the door when suddenly the doors locked. I looked back to see Merlinda and Taelor giving me a stern look.
"Now what have we gone over?" Merlinda asked.
I rolled my eyes, but was kind of pleased that they didn't know that me and Nathan were working on our relationship. For all they knew it was a one time fuck and would never happen again. I had to keep my laugh in before saying, "no interaction with Nathan of any kind." I quickly opened the door and got out, laughing under my breath. Though I was nervous about the whole thing. I almost never kept anything from them, especially something they'd be disappointed about, but I couldn't tell them yet. I secretly liked the sneaking around with Nathan, and it wasn't like we were back together yet, we were working on it. Now I just had to keep my emotions in check throughout the school day
