This was my first time in a long time that I've been up and very active during the peak of the day. And therefore, the day had caught up with me and I fell asleep on the futon in the guest room at about 4 in the afternoon. When Eric and I got back together, my human side fought the change of sleeping all day and staying awake all night. It took a few months for my circadian rhythm to adjust. Any human that's with a vampire will tell you, it's important to keep what we call 'day-walker' hours. You pretty much stay up all night with your vampire and when dawn calls him to sleep, you sleep with him. This only works if you don't have a day job if you do then your screwed.
My eyelids flicker open to the unlit room. No daylight. I wake like I've been pulled by the collar. No sleepiness, no slow warming up. The fluorescent numbers of the alarm clock on the table teased me with the time of 8:15 PM. It wasn't a second later before I heard Holly shouting at someone. I peered out the window and was in shock. Eric was standing outside peering in the window at me. He was obviously pissed off and so was I.
"Why is my man standing outside?" I shout out, I wasn't particularly speaking to anyone, I was pissed, so I was shouting at everyone. None of them answered me, they all watched him as her watch them from the porch. His arms crossed, looking as impatient as ever.
As I walked towards the door, coven sister Marine stepped in front of me. " Look, Tara, we don't mind your son, but him," her eyes curtly cut over towards the door.
"First of all, he can hear you, second, I can assure you, he is the last person who would harm us, now get the hell out of my way."
Marine was madder than a puffed toad, but she was no fool and she got her ass out of my way.
"All the girls are scared Tara, things have changed," Holly whispered, as I walked past the group of sneering residents, reaching for the doorknob.
I couldn't believe it, this is not the voice of reason I was just speaking to a few hours ago.
"Holly, you of all people should know that being disrespectful to vampires because you see them as evil is prejudice, straight up."
"This is our house Tara Mae and we don't want no damn vamper in her!" Luellen came out of nowhere shouting at me, she was on the verge of tears. I don't get it, Eric has never done anything to deserve this.
"Fine!" I was not going to waste another breath on their ignorant asses, they all seemed to forget that I'm the one who bought this damn house. "I'll talk to him on the porch."
I stepped out to the porch, ignoring the gasps, snickering whispers and rude glares staring us down from inside the house.
Witches are total bitches.
"Good evening Tara," My vampires' cerulean eyes are fixated on me as he reaches for my hand, pulls it to his lips and presses a soft kiss to my flesh.
"Good evening, Eric," I smile warmly at the handsome creature in front of me, unmoved at the rudeness that is still going on inside.
At six and a half feet tall, everything is long on Eric. His arms are nearly as long as my legs, which makes me giggle. I know under that tank top he has a set of washboard abs that make my ovaries tingle. Eric doesn't look so big next to other men, but next to me, he looks like a giant. A big, sexy, blonde giant...Yummy.
"I've rented a vehicle, come sit with me, I have news to share."
"Of course, but first, would you call on one of your wolves to keep an eye on the coven?"
"Isn't Merlotte doing so?"
"He's helping, but not in that capacity, why do you ask," I halted my steps, as we near the end of the driveway. I glance back, checking to see if I am still being watched; looks like the rude witches went on about their business.
"You reek of him, I was sure he'd volunteer to serve you in order to remain in your presence."
I am rarely at a loss of words, but here I am. "Eric, I had a drink and a chat with an old friend, that is it, that is all."
He just stared at me unblinking. After a moment he pulled his cell phone, dialed a number and began talking Swedish, I realized he was talking to Pam. I was sure he was giving her orders to hire a wolf for the coven. This is good, Holly can hire this tracker Quinn, Eric and Pam will have a night guard on duty at Moon Goddess and Sam will keep track of the police investigation.
"Thank you, Eric," I said when he opened the car door for me. I climbing into the big rented Suburban, sliding into the seat.
"Jorge Alonso de San Diego has sequestered a sentencing hearing for our family."
"What? Who is that?" I was stunned, I really don't have time for this shit, "I thought that Godric and all the other Kings and Queens paid our debt."
"Jorge is a five-hundred and fifty-year-old newly appointed chancellor of the authority. Since our departure, changes in the hierarchy have taken place. We need to present ourselves as alliances, we will be placed on a sort of probation and then our slate shall be clean."
"That sounds simple enough," I agreed, I wanted to show Godric and his friends who paid for our freedom, that I was very grateful. This was the perfect way to do so. As long as the terms were in reason, I would agree to any of their probationary terms.
"They demand the presence of our child."
"Fuck that shit, never going to happen."
I was livid that Eric was even considering that. I know how curious vampires are, they can question and investigate me all they want, but Ciree...no...just- fuck that!
"I've already sent for him."
"Send him back!" I sneered at him with the venom of a cobra, "I don't trust anyone when it comes to my son, my only son. They will fear him, want to experiment on him like he's some sort of alien, which he technically is. But so am, so they can do what they want to me..."
He leaned forward and entwined finger by finger into my hand he is holding.
"Tara," He interrupted my protest, "My love, you have my word, I shall protect you and my child with my life. So shall my progeny and my sire," He gave my hand a slight squeeze inserting a healthy dose of emphasis to his point, "There is no compromise, Ciree will be present."
I desperately sought the comfort in his promise but, damn it, I could not find it. I was terrified for my son, he'd killed a vampire with silver, and he is everything a vampire thought could not be possible.
Tears welled in my eyes and spilled over as I wept uncontrollably. In the leather seat of the Suburban, Eric let me cry. My vampire said no more but sat with my warm hand in his cool easy clasp.
