(Y/N)'s Point of View

Black turned to white as I opened my eyes for what felt like the first time in years. I was lying face up, a bright light hanging from the ceiling above. I squinted at its presence, and tried to take in my surroundings.

The room was small, and its inside felt like a confining cage. I was sat on what looked like a hospital bed. To my right stood a series of cabinets and drawers, filled with unknown items. In the opposing direction was nothing but the smooth, white wall and a tall mysterious device. Two cables extended from the ominous machine, and it was then that I noticed that the cables were inserted into my skin. One led to my left forearm; the other to my right knee.

In a thoughtless panic, I reached for the cord on my arm to yank it free.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you."

I turned around swiftly. In my blind panic, I hadn't noticed the presence of another being in the room. The moment I saw her blue hair I recognized her. It was Elysia, the examiner for the first phase.

With her sudden appearance, the memories flowed back. Thoughts of the mountain flew within my brain. I remembered solving the riddle, and heading down the path. And the pain. The pain that was so excruciatingly bad that I should have died. Just thinking about it now made me want to curl up in a corner and cry. Needless to say, I now understood why I was hooked up to the metallic device.

"So I see you know what you're doing here?" asked the Hunter. She must have been able to read me well. I nodded tentatively.

"Good." She stated in a rather blunt manner.

My throat was raw, but I forced words to come out. "Where is this place located?"

"It's not a hospital if that's what you're thinking. This is a makeshift infirmary, we're on a train to the second phase now."

My heart dropped. Did I even pass the first phase? It seemed doubtful that I could continue in this state.

"You know, you're lucky." Spoke the woman, looking down on me. "This train ride takes two days. Any other year, and you would have failed. Hell, if it was up to me I would've failed you. My boss thinks differently though. He said you're tough. Anyways, you have one more day to recover, so you better do it quick."

She turned and began to head for the door.

"Wait!" My call stopped her in her tracks. She turned to me with an irritated look upon her face.

Despite my understanding of the situation, I was still confused as to why I was here. How was I not dead? She gave me no logical reason why I should still be living, yet here I was, as alive as ever.

"How am I still alive?" I asked.

"See that device?" She said, pointing towards the robot transferring strange fluids in and out of my body. "What it does is-"

I interrupted her. "That's not what I mean. I remember how I felt at the end of phase one. I remember the pain, and the numbness, and the emptiness as my conscience drifted away. How come I'm still alive?"

She looked at me exasperatedly. "You'll have to ask him about that." And without further ado, she left the door, shutting it behind her with a resounding clack.

"Who was him?" I thought to myself. I knew no one at this exam. The only person I suppose I "knew" was Tonpa, but he wouldn't dare come close to me. Well... there was the magician but what motive would he have for saving me?

Thoughts continued to haunt my mind until I drifted to sleep...

---

Once again, I was startled awake. However, this time I recognized my surroundings. I was still in the same room, and I was still in the same bed. For a moment, I thought it was time for the next phase of the exam. This thought was quickly thrown aside when I saw a certain magician standing in the corner of the room.
