Sleep evades me

As I lie down to rest

A headache creeping closer

Pushing me to the edge

You lie next to me

Surrounding me in warmth

Your wild smell soothes me

Slow breaths brushing my neck

A nose nudges my head

More warm breaths tickle me

A soft hand rests on my back

I fall faster into dreamless rest

A soft whine stirs me

You want to make sure I'm ok

I reach back and stroke your fur

You lick my hand and I calm

I relax knowing so well

You will keep me safe from harm

And protect me from demons

Who haunt me dusk to dawn.

As my body shuts down

You enforce your presence

You are here. You are near

You are my favorite company.
