A young couple parks their car in front of a red house. The man gets out first and helps his wife out. As the woman makes her way towards the house the man opens the back door of the car and brings a baby carrier out. Inside the carrier lays a beautiful baby girl; who is fast asleep. Before the man can get to the front door, of his house, a woman wearing a dark cloak approaches him.
"Merry meet, neighbor, I see your wife has given birth to a precious baby girl. May I take a closer look?" The woman asks.
"No, you may not. You shall not taint my darling daughter with your evil magic. I've seen some of the odd things you do, as you worship the devil. Go back to where you've come from and never speak to me or any of my family again!" The young father yells.
"I do not worship this so-called devil. I serve the goddess of the moon and do not believe in using evil magic unless I see fit. Why do ye judge so quickly before knowing what ye are judging, sir?"
"I told you to go away; I do not care what you say. You are a disgrace and will not trick me into believing your lies. You are a follower of the devil and you cannot tell me otherwise. Now away with you, witch." The man tried to move away but he was unable to. "Why can't I move? You're using your devil magic, I demand you to stop!"
"Heed thy words, you have not seen true evil but one day you will. There will come a day, her twentieth birthday, your daughter will not be so precious anymore and you will fear her, more than you have ever feared me." The woman then began to chant in a language he had never heard of and then walked away. Sweat dripped down the man's face but he was able to move again. Shuffling his feet he took his child inside and told his wife what had happened.
Present day
Today is the day I am no longer a teenager. I am officially an adult. I look at my phone and I have multiple messages. The first one is from my mother: Happy birthday, sweetie, I can't believe you are twenty years old. Your father and I will be stopping by around twelve o'clock. I love you, see you then. I look at the time on my phone and notice it is almost that time. Throwing my phone onto my bed I get ready for my day. The night before, I picked out a red dress with a pair of black bootie heels, so I slip all that on. Once I adjust my outfit I run to the bathroom to apply my make-up and curl my hair. Halfway through curling my hair, I hear my doorbell ring. I sit my curling iron down next to the sink and go open the door. My mother pushes through the door the moment I open it.
"Oh my baby, you look so beautiful." She says pulling me into a hug my father watches with a smile plastered on his face.
"Thanks, mom," I say returning the hug, "but I will look even better when my hair is finished." I pull away and notice she is smiling, too.
"Of course, sorry honey. Go finish your hair, your father and I will be right here waiting for you. "I kiss my mother's cheek making her smile widen.
"I'll be right back," I run back to the bathroom and finish curling my hair. After my hair is finished I head back to the living room, where my parents are waiting for me. As I enter I notice my mother and father talking but the moment they see me they become quiet and stare at me.
"What? Is there something wrong with my outfit or hair?" I ask and begin to turn around to go back to the bathroom; to check for myself.
"No, sweetheart, your mother and I have a surprise for you, though." My father smiles at my mother. My mother then reaches into her purse and brings out a small box. I move in closer as my mother holds the box out for me to take. The moment the box is in my hands I open it, revealing a pure gold cross, attached to a sterling silver necklace.
"It's beautiful," I say, "would you mind helping me put it on?" I ask my mother, who grabs the necklace from my grasp and I pull my hair off my neck. I feel her hands move away from my neck and I let my hair fall back down. My mom moves back to my father's side and they looked at me then at each other and smile.
"We also made reservations at Lorenzo's," my father began, "it's at one o'clock. So, we better get going."
"Thanks so much, mom and dad, but you don't have to take me to a five-star restaurant."
"Nonsense, honey, today is an important day. We want to make sure it's the best day of the year." My mother says as she walks towards the door. Knowing there is no talking them out of it I make my way to the closet, near the front door, and retrieve a light jacket. Everyone walks outside and gets into my father's car. Lorenzo's is on the other side of town near all the major shops. Halfway there my mother turns on the radio and gospel music fills the car. I am used to the music and even catch myself singing along to some songs. Half an hour goes by and we finally make it to the restaurant. I've only been here one other time, but I was younger so my memory of it is blurry. As my father pulls into the parking lot I observe the building. It is pretty large to only be a restaurant and it has many windows. I can see inside and notice there are a lot of people in dressed up. I'm glad I picked something formal to wear, I think to myself. My father pulls up to the building and there is a man wearing a red vest, a valet, waiting for us to exit the car. Once we were out of the car my dad handed the valet his keys and we entered the fancy building.
