"Why him?"

( Scarlett's pov)

Michael sat in front of me on the edge of the desk. He smoked his cigarette and blew the fumes up into the air of the office above my head. If anyone was to look in through the blinds it wound appear to be an interrogation.

He crossed one leg over the other then lowered his gaze down from the ceiling to meet my eyes. I took in every aspect of the boy sitting in front of me. While sitting on the plush armchair in front of him he appeared tall, his hair was perfectly placed with a small swirl in the front. His collar was done tightly and appeared to be freshly adjusted.

I, on the other hand failed to compose myself when he met my eyes. "I want you to know that I won't pressure you into anything, I won't stay at your place if you aren't comfortable and if you want I can stay out of sight." Michael spoke calmly he was now collected and his cool blue eyes bore into mine.

I sat up and leaned into him my face closing in to his knee due to the height, so I traced it with my fingertips seductively. " Michael if you think you'll be watching me at all you've got another thing coming, I don't need protection, while you were away living your quiet village life I was the daughter of a crime boss. While you were sound asleep in your comfy bed at Poll's I was holding my bedroom door shut armed with a pocket knife. If there's anything we need to begin with it's that I don't need you."

I stopped tracing pattern on his knee and hiked up my skirt where I revealed my dagger, Glistening in the sunlight that seeped in the office. He grunted at the act and pulled the skirt down. "Well how do you suppose I persuade Tommy you don't need me eh ?"

I stood up and placed both hands on his arms. He was struggling to keep a straight face and I took advantage of his innocence. In this room no one could make out what I did or what I said so I felt I could tell him anything. "Don't tell Tommy, Please just act like you're guarding me and when he's gone- leave." I plucked up a brow at the last word and he smirked. I was unaware of his motives for joining my act but I allowed it to happen.

Tommy came in later and gave a list of all the places I could go and told Michael how to watch me. He then called for a car to bring us back to my place for the night. The first night.

Michael pulled on the navy coat that lay over his chair at his desk and a hat that caught my attention. He helped me put my coat on. I snaked into the sleeves of the coat, taking in his height and stature, Michael was tall and quite broad, well built. I didn't doubt his ability to take a man down in that moment.

"I like that hat it suits you.." I buttoned up the coat and he fixed the hat meeting my clearly regretful eyes. I knew that was a mistake as soon as I said it. "Sure you do" he scoffed as he walked out of the office. I sighed as I made a note never to do that again.

When I walked out of the betting office I received a few hollers from the customers. That was a regular occurrence regarding the neighbourhood I was in and the man to women ratio. I rolled my eyes and closed the door behind me. As I looked around for Michael I spotted Tommy leaning against the wall of the building lighting his cigarette. He tipped his hat at me and went inside. 

"Over ere ", Michael was leaning against the blue car his outfit matching perfectly. I scoffed at his coolness and hurried out into the street hopping in the car. He smirked at the men peering out the windows at us and started the engine. Next thing I knew it we were on our way to my house, I didn't know how this was going to work out but the lack of protection made my stomach turn, would someone happen to me with only one man guarding? And why him?
