“So, you're from where exactly?” I asked a bit annoyed that Caleb had kept avoiding the question for the past half an hour.
“You're not going to drop this?”
“Never.”
“I'm from London.”
“Why were you hiding your accent before?” Caleb smirked at the question.
“Have you ever seen American girls around us British boys? If we're their age our accents are hot, if we're younger are accents are cute and they smother us. I wanted to avoid that.”
“Makes enough sense.” I wiped the sweat from my brow, dragging the sled behind me. Thankfully the wires had only come untied once. We had been walking for....Hold on.
I checked my watch. “Five Hours.. Five hours and nothing!” I shouted to no one in particular. It had been nothing but sand, grass, trees, ocean, sand, grass, trees, ocean, sand, grass, trees, ocean, sand, grass, trees, ocean...Well, you get it.
“I'm tired...”
“We just took a break?”
“Please?” I sighed.
“Okay, I'll just mark the area.” I dropped the sled as Caleb fell down into the sand. I moved over to the tree line, taking out the small knife and carving a star into it carefully. I looked into the tree line, seeing nothing but...more trees.
I turned around, walking back to the sled and sitting down in the sand. I stared out at the ocean, sighing out loud. It seemed so stretch on for miles.
“Where do you think we are?”
“With any luck, Hawaii.” I smiled. “Or somewhere close.”
“Think it could be?”
“Probably not.”
“..........I miss my parents.”
“You'll see them again.”
“Do you miss anyone?” Caleb looked at me.
“Yeah...my Xbox.” I laughed a bit, shrugging it off. The truth was, I had started missing my mom. My dad too, my real dad. The one who had been dead for the past year.
“......No I mean seriously.”
“We should get moving again.” I stood quickly, grabbing the wires and gripping them tightly in my hands. We started trudging through the sand, each step filling my shoes a bit more.
“What do you think happened the plane?”
“Lightning? Engine issues? A bird? Damn if I know. One minute we were leaving the storm, the next thunder and then the engine was on fire. The plane broke apart though...”
“Maybe we got shot?”
“By who? If we were shot at, there would be ships.. I wish I knew Caleb but I don't.” I sighed, looking up at the sky, feeling the hot sun beaming down on my back. My shirt clung to my back, soaked with sweat. We continued walking.
