Luciana watched the water fall infront of her naked body. She was so consumed by her  thoughts, she couldn't even hear the music she had selected before getting in the shower. A distant, buffled sound made its way towards her ears. It was a  constant knock on the bathroom door, that made her thoughts come back to the place she was in—the shower.
She stepped in the water and felt every drop of water running down her skin, caressing her, dancing their way down to the floor.
Knock, knock, knock...
Luciana wished she was a drop of water, free to dance her way out of situations, free to caress the body she desired to touch with her delicate, soft fingers.
Knock, knock, knock...
She took the soap and put it on her body, gingerly. "I'm almost out, mum!", she yelled as she washed the foam of soap off her arms. More knocks. "I said I'm almost out, mother", she repeated, impatiently shampooing her curly hair.
"Hurry up, you dumbass!", her brother Mason yelled back at her, still knocking on the door. "I called an ambulance, mum is not waking up, please hurry up", Mason's voice was cracking and his hand shaked as the knocks on the door slowed down. "Please," he begged one last time, "please, Luci".
Luciana felt as though she was going to start crying, and never stop. All she could hear and feel, was her irregular heartbeat. She closed the water tap, and grabbed her towel in a swift move. She got dressed up as fast as her shaking hands let her and threw the door open. Mason was seating there, tearfilled eyed and with his arms around his knees.
"Where is mum, Mason?", she asked calmly. No response. She started running towards her mother's room, heart in her hand. "Mum, no...", Luciana uttered when she saw the woman who had gave birth to her, looking pale and cold as stone. She sat next to her in bed and searched for signals. She heard her weak heart. Boom, boom, boom..
She had to save her. "Mason, come here right now!", she demanded, as she looked for her mother's car keys around the room.
By the time Mason got to the room, she had already found the keys.
"We are carrying her to the car, come help me out", she sweetly said. She put the keys in her pocket and tried to carry her mother. When she failed to do so, tears started rolling down her face and her hands were out of her control. Mason effortlessly took her mum and walked to the car. Luciana stood still for a moment, before she heard the ambulance getting close.  Then it was like her legs were moving on their own.
Mason was talking to one of the paramedics when she got there, and her mother was already on the ambulance. She rushed to where they were.
"Only one of you can go on the ambulance with her", the paramedic said. Luciana wanted to go, she really wanted to, but the ambulance had left with Mason in it before she could even react.  What was she going to do now? She still had the car keys, meaning she could drive to the hospital.
As she got in and buckled her belt, she called the only person who could go to the hospital with them. "Hello?", both hands on the steering wheel, lips trembling. "How is my sweet baby today?". She was not able to process it all, to find the right words to say. "Mija?"
She got the car out of the garage, slowly. "Yes, abuelita. It's me. I...", silence seemed to last forever. " we need you to come to the hospital as fast as you can, something happened to mum, and we don't know what it is..."
She heard her grandmother gasp. "Mija, mija... calm down. I'll be right there".
