We ended up watching Orphan Black, my absolute favorite show. The intro music played as I settled into the couch, wrapping myself up in the throw blanket I found at the edge. When the pizza guy finally arrived, the scent of hot, cheesy goodness drifted through the air, making my stomach rumble. Kara rushed to grab the box, and I immediately helped myself, snagging four slices like I hadn't eaten in days.
"It astounds me how much you two eat and how you don't gain anything," Alex said, eyeing the pile of pizza on my plate. She shook her head in mock dismay.
Kara just laughed, flashing one of her bright, carefree smiles. "Sorry, Alex, it's part of being a Kryptonian," she teased, shooting her a playful glance.
Alex rolled her eyes dramatically. "Yeah, must be so tough, living life with super strength and an appetite to match."
"Yep, so this pizza—no touchy!" I wagged my finger at her, feeling a surge of protectiveness over my food. "Hands off, or I might have to use my alien powers against you."
Alex grinned. "Idiot," she said, shaking her head but smiling at my antics.
The room felt warm, not just from the pizza but from the laughter and easy conversation flowing between us. It had been so long since I'd had a moment like this, sitting with both of my sisters, just enjoying their company without the weight of the world hanging over us. For the first time in what felt like forever, things felt... normal.
"I really have missed you guys," I said, my voice softening as I looked between Kara and Alex. I wasn't sure they realized just how much I meant it.
Their expressions softened too. The lighthearted banter faded, replaced with something more genuine.
"We missed you too, kid," Alex said, reaching over to squeeze my hand. Her touch was warm and reassuring, like she could sense how much I needed that little bit of connection. "It's been way too long."
"Yeah," Kara added, her eyes filled with the same warmth. "We're glad you're finally here."
I smiled, my heart swelling. It felt like I was finally where I was supposed to be—like a missing piece had fallen into place. "Okay, okay, enough sappiness!" I said, trying to shake off the sudden wave of emotion. "Unpause it already! I need to finally finish season 4 because I've heard season 5 is amazing."
I pointed to the TV, eager to get back to Orphan Black. That show was everything to me, and everyone should watch it because it was literally life-changing. "Cosima is my favorite," I added, eyes locked on the screen as the episode resumed.
"She's cool, but I'm more of a Sarah fan," Alex said, leaning back against the couch and taking a bite of her pizza.
"Nope, I love Alison," Kara chimed in, folding her arms as if she had just declared the ultimate truth.
I grinned. "Alison's awesome too, but Cosima's got that whole nerdy genius thing going on. She's brilliant and a badass. What's not to love?"
As the episode played on, I felt a strange kind of peace settle over me. It was as if all the worries I had about moving, about starting over, about the internship, had temporarily faded away. Sitting there with my sisters, laughing and debating over fictional characters, made everything seem a little less daunting.
"So, have you guys tried Wynonna Earp yet?" I asked, my thoughts drifting to another show I had been obsessed with lately.
"Not yet, but I've read the comics," Alex replied, a hint of excitement in her voice. "Loved them."
"You've got to watch the show, then. Wait until you meet Waverly," I said, leaning forward eagerly. "She's not in the comics, but she's such an awesome character. Trust me, you'll love her."
We kept watching, our conversation flowing naturally between bites of pizza and occasional outbursts during the episode's more intense moments. By the time the clock hit 11, we had only made it through a couple of episodes. I didn't want the night to end, but Alex had work in the morning, and she couldn't stay much longer.
"I should get going," Alex said with a sigh, standing up and stretching. "Gotta get to the lab early tomorrow. The work of a brilliant scientist is never done."
I pouted, feeling a pang of disappointment. "Do you have to go?"
Alex smiled warmly at me. "I do, but don't worry—we'll hang out again soon. You're not getting rid of me that easily." She wrapped me in a tight hug before heading for the door.
"Don't be a stranger," I called after her, stifling a yawn as exhaustion finally started to catch up with me.
"I won't," she promised before heading out.
The apartment felt quieter after she left. I dragged myself to the bathroom, the floor cold beneath my bare feet, and splashed water on my face. The reflection in the mirror showed a girl who was tired but content—a girl who had been through a lot but was starting to find her place.
Once I finished brushing my teeth, I climbed into bed, feeling the soft blankets wrap around me like a cocoon. I hadn't realized how much I missed this—being surrounded by my sisters, by people who cared about me.
Kara popped her head into my room just before I closed my eyes. "Everything okay in here?" she asked, her voice soft.
I nodded, smiling up at her. "Yeah, I'm good, Kara."
"Okay, goodnight," she said, starting to close the door.
"Wait..." I said, my voice barely above a whisper. She turned back, her expression concerned. "Do you... do you think about them all the time?"
Her face changed, softening into something sad and distant. She walked over and sat at the edge of my bed, her gaze far away for a moment. "Not all the time," she finally said, her voice quiet. "But when I'm alone, or when it's quiet... I think about our home. And our family."
I swallowed hard, the familiar ache rising in my chest. "Why did they send us away? We could've left together. We could've all survived."
Kara looked at me, her eyes filled with a mix of sorrow and understanding. She reached for my hand, holding it tightly in her own. "They wanted to give us the best chance they could," she said gently. "Me, you, and Kal. They loved us. They did what they had to."
Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, but I blinked them away. "I just miss them," I whispered, my voice barely audible.
"I miss them too," Kara said softly, squeezing my hand. She leaned in and hugged me, and I clung to her, letting the comfort of her embrace chase away the sadness, even if only for a moment.
Eventually, she pulled back, giving me a reassuring smile. "Get some sleep, okay? You've got a big day tomorrow—starting your internship at CatCo."
The mention of my internship made my stomach twist with nerves, but I nodded. "Okay. Night, Kara."
"Night," she replied, standing up and heading for the door.
As soon as she left, the room felt bigger, quieter. I lay there for a few minutes, staring up at the ceiling, my mind racing. Tomorrow was a big day. I was about to step into a whole new world at CatCo, and I couldn't afford to mess up—not when Kara had recommended me.
The nerves buzzed inside me, but I knew I had to prove myself. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart, and finally let my eyes close. Before I knew it, sleep pulled me under, and the weight of the day disappeared.
