The Interview

Looking in the mirror I smooth out my white peasant blouse, double checking that it is still tucked into the waistband of my black pencil skirt. I had torn off my nude tights and put them back on at least three times by now; they are currently thrown haphazardly onto my bed, where they will stay. My brown hair is hanging in curled waves down my back, just reaching past my shoulders. My black framed glasses are perched perfectly on my nose, not crooked or dirty at all.

My gaze finds my reflection's bright hazel eyes and I watch a hundred different emotions flash by; fear, excitement, nervousness, insecurity... I close my eyes.

You've got this. This is your chance; your opportunity. Take it. This will not turn out the same as your last job, Kristen. Get yourself together, and let's make this happen.

Thankfully, I had been googling the company and CEO to get myself up to date. There actually wasn't very much information on Mr. Sage, other than the announcement that he was planning to turn the company over to his son soon, also named Isaiah Sage. There was even less information about him. However, the company was more than willing to keep information public. They were doing very well; the company's stockholders were receiving increasing dividends each quarter and Sage & Co. was growing faster than anybody anticipated.

I cannot wait to climb this ladder.

Running into the kitchen, I glance at the clock on the oven- 8:32. Awesome, I have plenty of time to run to Starbucks, collect myself, and drive to the office building. I pull out my phone and open up the Maps app and type Sage & Co. It pulls up the building and tells me that it will be about a 10-minute drive to the opposite side of the city.

I hug Jagger, kiss his face and walk to the door. I just happen to glance down and groan out loud. Of course, I forgot shoes. I run back to my walk-in closet and grab my favorite pair of heels.

"Good ol' Kate Spade." I tell Jagger and kiss him on the nose one more time. "Okay, I'm off for good this time, mama is getting a new job. I love you Jag! Charity will be here soon to take you for a walk."

I pull my RX350 into the correct parking garage with less than twenty minutes to spare. Starbucks was training new baristas when I ordered, and they ended up getting it wrong; twice. Then I burnt my tongue and roof of my mouth when I ate my egg bites on the way to the office. Then all the different parking garage attendees kept giving me incorrect directions to the right one. So that's fun. But I am determined to not let this ruin my day. I am getting this job.

Finding a parking spot is proving to be difficult as I travel up the stories. Aha! Brake lights near the elevator indicate a car leaving and I could not be luckier with the location. It takes forever for the little Beamer to pull out but finally they do, and I am quick to back in and run to the elevator. I barely manage to hit lock on my key fob to my car before the doors shut on me.

Clutching my handbag as the doors open to the ground floor, I take off towards the tallest building in the vicinity. Sage & Co is located in the fourth tallest building in the city, but it's located more uptown than the rest of them, in the nicer part of town. It's a gorgeous building, easily seventy floors tall. The architects definitely knew what they were doing when they designed it, taking a page from New York's book. The windows make up the exterior of the building, looking like it was made completely of glass. Standing at the base of the building, I take a second and stare straight up to the top and for just a moment I feel how truly small I am in this world.

I run through the main doors and head straight to the security desk. There is a sweet looking woman sitting there in a black uniform, her sleek brown hair pulled back into a tight bun. Looking behind her, I am taken aback by the beautiful tile mosaic. The back wall is completely covered with vibrant tiles, ranging from colors of vivid greens and yellows to deep black and blue. They created a beautiful scene; a grass field with huge teddy-bear sunflowers sprinkled throughout. The sky was bright and deep; on one side it was dark night with stars sparkling everywhere and the other was bright day with the sun peeking out behind a beautiful puffy white cloud. It was gorgeous.
