I took a hair pin from my dresser and locked the door with it. I closed it tightly making sure that everything was secure. My window was rather big and defiantly large enough for my to squeeze into. I slid it open with ease. Before making my escape I turned off the sound machine. Who needs to just here the waves when I could feel them too. I looked down from the window pulling a bit on the vines that traveled up the house. They were sturdy and could keep me off the ground. I took my board in my hands and began to descend.
My feet hit the ground lightly. I smiled jumping off of the vine and running for the beach. Tiki torches had been lit and the sun had set. The water was glistening off the moon and the music had begun to play. I laughed watching everyone dance. There was a light tap on my shoulder and Aly stood behind me clearing her throat rather loudly.
"You made it!" she enthused. I smiled giving her a tight hug. We pulled away giggling.
"I would never miss a luau," I reminded her. Aly nodded in agreement. She pulled me over to where most of the guys were and we danced away. It was fun dancing in the beach again. The sand was warm under my feet. I was pulled away from Aly from by the cutest guy. His hair was the wildest and curliest mess I had ever seen. His eyes were what really attracted me. They were a beautiful blue. Which was nothing less than my favorite color of all time!
"Can I steal you for a minute?" he questioned. I was about to reply when I heard Alohani pounding on his drums. I held up a finger signaling him to give me a minute. I turned to my brother hooping and hollering along with the rest of the crowd.
"Welcome pilialoha and 'ohana (friends and family)! On the first day of summer we have seen some of the best waves today!" he yelled. We all cheered in agreement. Being honest they were some of the best waves I had seen all year. My brother extended an arm to me and I grabbed it as he pulled me by his side.
"The princess of the sea has returned!" My brother said introducing me to the crowd. I laughed at the remark. Princess of the Sea. My tittle had never really been claimed official but hey if my brother say it this way then I would too. Apparently the other guys did too. The cheering turned into a roar. People were blowing kisses and I smiled posing and listening to the madness.
"She's the princess huh? How come I didn't see her at the ISC?" called a girl with blond hair form the crowd. She didn't;t sound like she was from here. Her accent actually screamed more Australian to me. I looked out to the crowd searching for her face exactly.
"What? If you want to challenge me then step up!" I told her. The girl walked to the front of the crowd standing in front of me. Her features were perfect and she was staring me down like I was nothing. My eyes narrowed falling on her.
"I don't need to challenge you. A true princess of the sea would have signed up for the ISC. I don't recall seeing you at the tryouts," she teased. I had no idea of what she was talking about but already I didn't't like it.
"ISC?" I questioned her. I was sure that she had made it up. After all I had lived on this beach my entire life and not once have I participated, watched, or even heard of the ISC.
"International Surfing Competition. This beach is going to be claimed by tons of surfers from around the world. Princess of the Sea here didn't't even sign up for the competition. I guess it's time for the crown," she said. She plucked my head till a Hibiscus flower that was resting in my hair fell to the sand silently,"to come off." she finished. I stared at her in anger as she crushed the flower under her foot. I smiled at her before taking a beach towel in my hands. I ringed it out a bit and then sent the towel flying across the girls face with a quick slap.
"We'll see about that," I responded draping the towel over her and walking off in the direction of the shore. I wouldn't dare look back. Not even for a second. Of course I wouldn't go back home so I decided that I should head toward the rocky parts of the beach.
I climbed onto the rock finding a rather flat one to sit on. I couldn't believe that there was a competition here. One then I had missed! Now my beach was going to be taken over by tons of surfers. Of course I didn't approve. Not only that but nobody told me about the contest. Hoe could nobody tell me?
I groaned seeing a hand reach down to pick something up. My eyes traveled up the length of the arm. Obviously a boy. They kept going until meeting a face. The piercing blue eyes caught me off guard. It had been the same guy from before.
"Um...hi," he muttered. I noticed that he was picking up a shirt. His shirt.
"You left the luau," I replied ignoring the hello, "I really don't mean to be rude. Just a bit frustrated right now." He nodded as if he understood my situation. He sat beside me on the rocks.
"It's alright. I saw what happened back there," he added. I nodded of course he did. If I didn't know better I'd say that the entire neighborhood saw that.
"I still think you're the princess though. I mean you surf way better than me. I suck..."he continued I smiled at the compliment.
"You could not be that bad." I tried reassuring him. He shook his head in disagreement and then grabbed a surfboard that was sitting near mine.
"Watch," he told me. I did as he asked and you could defiantly see that this guys was a beginner. Her wobbled crazily trying to stand. Once he had a proper stance his face screamed nervous. As he was about to attempt a trick he slipped from his board and fell backwards into the water. I'll admit that it was very funny but still a rather sad sight to witness. He swam back over to me drenched.
"See?" he muttered the question. I nodded and handed him a towel. he began to dry himself.
"Well you're new to surfing. I've been surfing for nine years now so you won't get that good in a single run. Just keep trying though. I know you'll get it." I encouraged. Suddenly a smile crept upon his face and his eyes widened. He just stayed there for a while unmoving.
"Would you help me?" he questioned. I nodded in response and the smile gew wider, "How about tomorrow. I've got nothing to do."
"Sure uh.... What's your name?" I asked. He held out a wet hand to me.
"Dylan." I shook it smiling
"I'm Melody!" I said. The both of us worked out that we'd start practicing at ten tomorrow morning. Afterwards we'd get some lunch. I said goodbye grabbed my board and headed back home. I climbed into the window and saw my room untouched. The second I had unlocked the door I saw my stepfather there frowning.
"I know that you left," he told me I shrugged.
"I know that I left too/ Night!" I responded closing the door in his face and going right to sleep.
