I woke up on the floor, and it took me a second to remember why I was lying there in the first place.
I slowly sat up and yawned as I wiped my eyes, trying to stop the idea of going back to sleep from entering my mind. I let my hands drop from my eyes and land on my lower back, trying to ease the sore spots that had formed there over night.
I didn't get very much sleep last night, but that didn't come as mush of a surprise. I mean, sleeping on the floor of a new house wasn't exactly the best type of sleeping conditions a person could hope for.
Fighting back another yawn, I made my way to my feet and groggily walked over to the doors that led to the balcony.
Sunlight poured in through the double glass doors and lit up the entire room, so there was no need for me to turn on the light.
My hand pressed against the warm glass as I slid the doors open, and small shivers ran down spine.
I stepped out onto the balcony and leaned against the awning, letting the sunlight pour over me. A smile met my lips, and I took a deep breath of fresh air. The smell of rain and wet asphalt filled my nose, and I instantly knew that these scents would always remind me of Maine.
The air was filled with the sounds of birds chirping and rustling leaves, and I could still faintly hear the sound of moving water like I had when I first stood out here last night.
I peered over the edge of the balcony, hoping to see any form of water, and what I saw made me forget to breath.
Aside from the house across from ours and a few trees, my room had a perfect few of the ocean. And not just a small sliver of murky water that could be mistaken for a pond or small lake, but mile after mile of crystal clear blue salt water.
"You've gotta be kidding", I said softly to myself. This was amazing. We had the ocean at our doorstep.
I laughed, mostly out of disbelief. First the house, now this? It was to good to be true, yet here it all was. Right in front of me.
"Woooohooooooo!", I yelled, raising both of my arms above my head. I'm sure our new neighbors loved me, screaming at the top of my lungs so early in the morning, but I couldn't help myself. Ruining the chance of making a good first impression seemed a little more important than being neighborly at the moment.
I slowly dropped my arms from above my head and took a deep breath, resting my arms at my sides. Even though I've only been in Maine for half a night, it already feels more like home than my old house did. Sure, memories have been made there that can't be replaced, but I didn't leave anything behind unless it was sentimental. No family, no friends, just a few clouded thoughts that will eventually drift to the back of my mind. But right now, I feel as if Maine can become more than just memory. Maybe I can learn to call this home.
The sound of my moms phone alarm went off, invading my thoughts. I let out a slight groan, suddenly remembering why I had to wake up so early this morning.
Taking one last glance out at the ocean, I hesitantly turned around and slid open the double glass doors. Shutting the doors behind me, I slowly dragged my feet across my room and made my way down the hallway, towards my moms room.
Her phone alarm was still going off, so I assumed she hadn't woken up yet. I couldn't blame her though, since she just drove eighteen hours straight by herself.
I knocked three times on the closed door, waiting for a response from inside.
"Mom?", I asked, using a voice that was slightly quieter than a shout.
A load groan emitted from the other side of the door, and a few seconds later the alarm stopped beeping.
Glad to know that she was finally awake, I nodded with satisfaction before turning on my heel and going down the stairs, taking them two at time just like I did last night.
When I reached the living room, I grabbed my backpack from the couch that I had thrown it on last night. I started to unzip it, but the sound of my moms high pitched scream stopped me dead in my tracks.
"Mom, what's wrong?", I yelled, concern and confusion clear in my voice.
Half a second later she came running down the stairs, frantically trying the fix the mess of hair that rested on top of her head.
"I set my alarm wrong! We over slept!", she said, running past me and grabbing the car keys off of the kitchen counter.
I quickly finished unzipping my back pack and dumped out all that was inside. I slung it over my shoulder and quickly followed my mom out of the house.
"I bet you're glad you slept in you clothes", she said, locking the door behind us.
"Oh, you have no idea", I said, opening the car door and jumping into the passenger seat.
My mom followed in my footsteps and started the car, quickly pulling out of the driveway.
"Are you ready?", she asked, raising an eyebrow at me.
I bit my lip, trying to fight the butterflies that were starting to form in my stomach. "Of course not", I said, trying to keep my voice from cracking.
She laughed and shifted the car into drive. "Well, you have about fifteen minutes to prepare yourself", she said, trying to hide her smile. And with that, she put her foot on the gas pedal, and I put my hand around the assist handle.
