The silence that was growing throughout the hallway was almost unbearable as I waited for Mr. Serious to tell me where we were going.
We'd been roaming through the huge school for the last ten minutes, and in all that time he hadn't spoken one word to me.
I considered asking him myself, but I knew he'd either ignore me or laugh at me and say something like "You'll see".
I don't know what I did to deserve the silent treatment, besides sarcastically responding to his request, but he seemed to dislike me the first moment he laid his eyes on me. I'll be the first to say we both have equal feelings for each other, I just don't know why.
Another minute of silent passed over us, and I decided to take my chances and try to quench my curiosity.
"So, where we going?", I asked, keeping my tone as calm as possible. I didn't want to get further onto his bad side than I already was.
I was surprised, no, utterly bewildered when he actually answered without a trace of laughter.
"I thought you'd like to see the detention room, since you'll be spending the rest of the school day there", he said, his voice barren of emotions.
"Oh", I said, biting my bottom lip. Of course I would be put in detention for something I couldn't control. And on the first day of school, to make matters worse. Why couldn't this have been a normal day, barren of balled fists and cocky teachers?
"Mr. Morris, did you hear a word I just said?", Mr. Serious asked, breaking me away from my silent rant.
I furrowed my eyebrows and looked over at him. "No, sorry", I quickly replied.
Mr. Serious shook his head. "Well, I was just letting you know that Mrs. Toshney will be supervising detention today, so you'll have a chance to give her an apology before the days over", he said, clearly proud with his two birds, one stone idea.
What made him think I was going to apologize? It wasn't my fault I snapped at her, it was hers.
"Ok", I simply replied, not voicing my opinion.
He nodded in approval, and once again the halls were silent.
I wish we hadn't decided to make an enemy out of each other. Both our lives would have been much easier if we had just shook hands when we met and kept our feelings neutral. But of course it went almost the exact opposite, and now we hate each other.
Or maybe he just hates everyone he meets. Either way, I wasn't to fond of him.
So much things have gone wrong today, and its not even noon yet. If the rest of the day follows in its current path, then detention might be the highlight of my day. Besides meeting Maddie. She's been the only good thing about todays events, and I barely even knew her.
"Well, here we are", Mr. Serious said, gesturing to a faded wooden door in front of us. I hadn't even realized we had started to slow our pace, let alone come to a complete stop. I had to start getting a better grasp on reality.
The old door we had stopped in front of was in very bad shape, and it didn't look like it belonged in a school as nice as this. The wood was starting to peel at the bottom of the door as if the wood was starting to rot, and there were multiple words and names sketched onto the dirty surface.
"This was the first room ever built in this school", Mr. Serious stated, making sense of why the door looked like it had been made by a blind toddler. "Before this building became a school, it was an old mail room. This is the only part of the structure that was left standing when they started the construction, so they decided to leave it be and build around it", he explained. "Fascinating, isn't it?"
