There he was.
Seemingly buzzed and talking to a girl.
He turned his head my way and let the sweetest smile pull at his lips,
though it made my heart sink.
"Baby!"
He cheered,
but my attention was on the girl before him.
Her features were shadowed by the darkness of the room,
but her silhouette looked oddly familiar.
I turned to look at him and felt my head begin to pound,
and the confusion certainly wasn't helping.
"Hey y/n,"
She greeted,
her voice sweet and cheerful.
I stood up straighter,
knowing I knew this girl from somewhere.
Johnson took notice of my confused look,
and my teary eyes,
then quietly laughed.
"I'm not cheating, if that's what you're thinking. Y/n, you remember my mother, Jenn.
I gasped and brought my hands to my face in embarrassment,
"I'm so sorry! I didn't know you were in town!"
She giggled and wrapped me in her arms,
"Don't worry. Just helping Jack here with his...future."
She winked.
I looked to Jack for clarification.
"Well...I didn't want to do this now, like this, but.."
He pulled my hands and laced our fingers as one,
then kissed my knuckles lovingly.
He then held onto my left hand,
bringing his right to pull a box out of his back pocket.
Then he sank to his knee.
"W-"
"Sh, let me talk,"
he spoke with a chuckle,
though his hands were just as shaky as mine.
He opened the box to reveal a diamond that glimmered even in the darkest of nights,
and I felt the butterflies swarm my ribcage.
"Jack,"
I whispered,
bringing my free hand to wipe away the stray tears.
"Baby don't cry, I haven't even started."
He laughed through the cracks in his voice.
I watch the faint glisten of tears in his eyes as well,
"y/n y/l, you make me the happiest man I've ever been. I've never known love until I met you, and without you I know I'd be less of a man. I can't imagine a future without you, y/n. You're the light of my life, and I want to spend forever and more with you. So, will you marry me?"
I choked back a sob and nodded quickly,
never having been so sure of anything in my life.
"Yes. Oh my God, yes!"
He slid the diamond on my finger,
sealing our promise of forever.
