Shadows Die

In the following days, I had taken off the rosary, it had felt weird to have my wounds heal faster than normal and I wanted to wear my scar's as a sign of my new found strength. As a result of that, The Prophet went out of his way to avoid me, never looking me in the eye, but soon I started coming to training sessions more often, volunteering as much as he can so he could face me. I finally had power over him: his apparent guilt, and sometimes I could tell that he was actually going to try to apologize, but his pride wouldn't let him.

I hated him for that. That the all-powerful leader of the Rebels couldn't apologize at least once like he had anything to lose. However, he did stop terrorizing me and he did silently try to make it up for me, letting me sleep occasionally in the spare room in the Rebel's house.

Marlene was careful with me after that, not joking around as much, always seeming to expect a mental breakdown from me, like I could fall apart at any moment. But we had mostly made up after that, she apologized for making me go to that training session.

I woke up in the plain spare room, sunlight gently coating the room in warm sunlight, I yawned and stretched, slowly getting out of bed. Slipping on my clothes and deciding to go out barefoot, I walked out into the long hallway, bumping straight into The Prophet. My breath hitched in fear as he stared me down, icy blue eyes striking fear into my heart.

"Tell her that I never meant anything I said,"  He requested in a small voice that I would never imagine coming out of his mouth, and walked past me, quickly making his way out of the house.

"Wait! Who is she? How do I tell her that?" I called out after his retreating figure, but before I finished he slammed the front door shut.

I sighed, grabbing an apple out of the basket in the living room, and started eating it as I made my way to the town square, earning sympathetic glances as I walked past soldiers. I noticed Marlene with a bunch of other girls from the dormitory, talking among themselves, and I ran over to them smiling widely.

Their faces dropped when they noticed me, two of them glaring with envy blazing in their eyes, and Marlene looking sheepish, not meeting my eyes. "Hey guys, miss me?" I asked, ignoring the two girls glaring at me.

"Oh hey, Christina, we were just talking about you," Amber, a pretty girl with red hair and green eyes, snarled, her nose scrunched up in disgust.

"Oh, about what?" I asked, refusing to face her and busing myself with picking the seeds out the apple core.

Jennifer and Marlene murmured to each other quietly while Amber and I glared at each other for a reason that I could not identify.

Marlene muttered something incomprehensible, facing the ground.

"What was that Marlene? I don't think Christina heard you," Amber taunted, breaking her gaze from me and turned to Marlene expectantly.

"They were talking about you moving out and into the Rebels house, but I didn't want that," Marlene repeated, a bit louder than before, with a guilt-ridden expression on her face.

I took a shaky breath in, blinking away tears of anger and betrayal, "I'll be moving out tomorrow," and walked away from them, fighting the urge to go back there and punch Amber with all my might in her perfect little snobby face.

Ashley walked over to me, noticing my cold expression, asking, "What's wrong?"

"I'll be moving in with you guys permanently," I growled, still seething with anger towards the girls in my dormitory.

Ashley looked as if he was going to ask another question, but thought better of it and kept his mouth shut, walking over to the platform with the rest of the Rebel Leaders. I watched as the throng of soldiers made their way to the platform, some smaller ones were either put on the shoulders of taller soldiers and some were pushed to the front by the crowd. I watched Amber and the girls walk past me, every one of them glaring at me except for Marlene who looked at me disdainfully as she walked with Amber and her crew.
