Chapter 2: Meeting The Duke
ARTHUR'S POV. (mail deliverer)
I quietly open the door to the princess's bed chamber and check her mail bin, like I do every morning and I am surprised to see that there is a letter that is supposed to be going out to someone else from the princess. I lean down and pick up the letter from the basket and turn it over to read the name. Duke, is scrawled across the front of the envelope. Well, I better get this delivered, if it's to the Duke from the princess then it must be important because she never writes letters to men unless it's a must for her safety or the well-being or of some great importance. I turn around and quietly close the door then start walking back down the hallway the way I came.
I put my hood over my head because I can hear it raining outside and open the front door of, my lady's mansion and hop into my waiting carriage. I get close the carriage door and open the curtains to the front of the carriage to tell the driver where to go. And then we are off in this awfully treacherous weather. It's all for the princess and I know this letter needs to be delivered this morning.
DUKE CHARLES'S POV.
"Sir, a letter came for you," my home maid and a very willing one, comes in bowing her head in my direction and holding the letter out.
"Thank you, Rosie," I smile kindly when she lifts her head and I take the letter from her hands. I place it on my desk and sit in my chair. Rosie leaves the room, knowing that I do not need to say a word for her to be dismissed. I stare at the letter and wonder what it could say. I pick it up and turn it over face down and then slide my finger under the little slit of sealed paper and slide my finger down across the entire thing, popping loose the wax holding the envelope shut. I then proceed to take the letter out of the envelope and slide my finger in the little slit and across it to open the sealed letter as well. I unfold the letter with gentle hands and look down at the bottom of the page. There it reads Yours, Princess Emalia. I then look to the top of the page and begin reading.
Dear Duke,
Duke Charles, I have to ask you for a big favor, the biggest favor that I've ever had to ask anyone in my life. I hope that you will be able to do what is needed to help me and I hope to the heavens, that you understand where I'm coming from and why I need your help. As you know, I am only a woman and I am not able to do very much to protect myself or my city for that matter, and with my parents dead, no one will listen to what I have to say, being as they think I'm too young to be in order around here.
So, what I was hoping to do is, hand the town over to the next in line, a male of course, and let him rule so that everyone will listen to a good ruler, which yes I do know he is one. Him and I have been good friends since we were little, we grew up together, but if I do choose that, I will need a place to stay before I am married off to a man. As you must know by now, I do not trust very many men and living in the home of any regular man would be sinful, as most men live alone in their homes and I cannot have myself living in the home of a man that doesn't have any female living in the home already.
