I went right it was the most logical decision as I remember having to have rounded a corner once during the whole chase. so i began to walk in that direction i wandered for at least an hour though it was clear i was lost 45 minutes ago but by that point i had become too turned around to even hope i could go back so continuing on in the 50 degree foggy weather was as good of a choice as any. before i knew it i found myself at the edge of a lake that had to span for miles wide and was definitely not a good idea to swim in anyways. I walked to the edge of the pier looking into the cold murky water the water rippled as a tadpole broached the surface but when it stilled there was another figure behind me I turned jumping slightly causing me to loose my balance almost falling into the water below before the decrepit old man grabbed my shoulder pulling me forward back onto the pier
he spoke with a gravely voice "thems says that you fall in that there lake and the devil drags you to hell."
I stood still for a moment not quite sure to respond to him. he didn't seem to care though. I glanced over this old man who looked like death came for him years ago i was almost amazed that he was still able to stand. he looked brittle and weak and was unhealthily skinny like something had been feeding off of him I cleared my throat after what felt like minutes but had surely only been a second or two.
"well then uh thank you for the warning."
he nodded and began to walk off
"i dont suppose you know which way murky cove road is do you?"
he pointed off in some general direction across the lake not really helpful but it was something needless to say. the man was gone before i could thank him i began to look around for a boat i could use to get across and quickly found one outside a dismil lake front two story house. i carefully began to walk up the steps knocking on the door which swung open like they had been expecting me. there stood a lady who looked similar to the old man her cheek bones protruded as well as every other bone in her body and i took a step back feeling uneasy. she spoke in a soft voice that sounded strained
"what do you want?"
it took me a moment to form words "i um can i borrow your boat?"
she shrugged "i dont care."
I went to thank her but stopped as a small girl in a light pink night gown stepped out from behind her tugging on her pants
"i thought we were going to play?"
her demenor changed instantly as she looked at me curly brown hair framing her face.
"you need to leave. they dont want you here."
i opened my mouth to speak but was cut off by the little girl repeating herself clutching her bear at her side tightly. the mother began to back up and shut the door her eyes crying a silent plea for help shivers ran down my spine I don't know what was wrong with these people but i was more than ready to leave i stepped into the boat and untied it beginning the trip across the lake. my surroundings as already uneasy as they were seemed to only get more so with the fog lying on the top of the water obscuring my view. I made sure to take deep breaths lest the anxiety consume me. when i finally made it to the other side i tied the boat to a nearby post so she would be able to find it; though something told me she wouldn't be searching for it anytime soon.
i began walking hoping i was now headed in the right direction 20 minutes later i reached the road granted it was the next neighborhood over but at least i was on the right track i walked back to where i thought my backpack was. it took me a bit but i finally found it sorting through it nothing seemed to be missing there was however an addition a blurred Polaroid picture with the words "here's your picture lady" and a strange symbol scribbled on it. I growled in frustration throwing it to the wind and walking back home.I should have just stayed in bed today.
