Once I had finally reached home, I flopped down on the couch sure enough the door was unlocked like I thought it had been but luckily my neighborhood was full of trustworthy people who looked out for each other so no one had entered or stolen anything. I have to say that today had been a doozy of a day with the chase and all that happened after it I was just glad to be home. I took a moment to close my eyes and breathe in the familiar scent of home the smell of my latest strawberry and mango wax melt floated through the air making the house smell wonderful. I shifted my weight forward off the couch and onto my feet which noticeably hurt after all the running I had done today. I shuffled across the cold hard wood flooring finding my way upstairs and into the shower. I smelt like pine trees and rain a usually pleasant combination which today only served as a bitter reminder of a day gone wrong.
I stepped out of the shower onto the fuzzy blue rug my skin feeling pleasantly sore from the steaming hot water. I took the time to wrap myself in a fuzzy towel venturing out into the kitchen downstairs as I rooted through the fridge indecisively, I felt a breeze whoosh by me and glanced over my shoulder there was nothing there. I mean of course there wasn't I lived alone but after the unsettling events today it for some reason felt reassuring to know that I wouldn't turn a corner to be greeted by a family member lying in wait to frighten me. I turned back to the fridge pulling a cold drink out the hairs raising on the back of my neck as the breeze passed by again. I pivoted on my heels to see the window wide open letting in the cool air. how had I not felt it earlier? leave it to me to leave a window wide open when I go upstairs to shower.
I walked over shutting and locking it but as I turned there stood in the middle of my front room the boy from earlier with his white mask and yellowish-brown which quite frankly, I was coming to get a rather powerful distaste for.
"you have got to be freaking kidding me!"
the little fucker had the nerve to shake his head like it was an actual question. I gritted my teeth and with the best swing I could manage threw my drink at his head to my amusement as I went running by him, he had been knocked off balance and fell as it bounced off his head. I had to make this quick I made a dash for the kitchen to retrieve a weapon only to find a second person climbing through the window! quickly I have to think quickly! the stairs! I turned making a dash for the stairs oh what the hell?! not an option!!! I ran the other way as a tall lanky figure with no face peered at me from the top of the stairs.
where do I go now? without anything to lose I made a run straight for the door in my towel I made it to the front porch step before I felt the strong arms of one of the intruders wrap around my midsection to pull me back to the house. in one last resort of panic I let out the most ear shattering scream of my life before I knew it I had found myself ass first on the porch in only my towel as the two intruders ran back into the forest seeing my neighbor from across the road come running to my aide.
"what's going on?! are you ok?! why are you only in your towel out here?!"
I took a moment to catch my breath clinging to her in a panic hurriedly murmuring about the masked men and the tall man on the stairs. she looked more than skeptical as she looked back into the house the door wide open.
"can you stand darling?"
I nodded but my knee began to give way due to fear so she wrapped her coat around my shoulders and helped me up and across the street into her house. Ms. Maisie was a sweet lady and up until now I've taken her for granted. but in this moment, I couldn't have been more grateful for her.
I shakily walked downstairs into her den after getting dressed the clothes she had lent me were mostly to small, but I managed to find a black hoody and a pair of lounge pants with coffee cups on them that fit me. my hair previously brushed was now wild and tosseled.
"Ms. Maisie?" I called out trying to grab her attention.
she turned her lips pulling into a warm smile as she wiped a tear from her eye
"Ms. Maisie are you ok? I'm sorry if I scared you but um thank you for the clothes"
"oh no dear you didn't scare me. and you're very welcome it's just..." he sighed "oh well you remind me so much of my Jane"
I wasn't sure who Jane was but after all she had done for me, I was more than happy to listen. I went ahead and took a seat on the floral printed couch placing my hands on my knees
"who's jane?"
she seemed to reminisce for a moment frowning a moment before a mournful smile took its place as she sat across from me.
"Jane was my daughter I lost her when I was just a young girl. well I mean younger than I am now anyways" she let out soft laugh
"how old was she?"
"oh she came to me at about 15 after a dreadful fire that left the poor darling burnt all over."
"she came to you?"
her smiled drooped into a frown "yes. I adopted her as her parents had perished in the same fire that left her scarred"
"how awful."
she nodded and got up
"but let us not reminisce on the sad times but the joyful ones. can I get you something to drink dear?"
I shook my head as she got up to go get herself some coffee. I could hear her voice from the kitchen
"though I do want to know why I found you naked on your porch. screaming none the less. "
the question jarred me back to the reality of why I was over here. I wasn't here to have coffee with my neighbor. I was here because two men and some creature chased me out of my house practically. I watched her hoping she would let the topic go if I was quiet. alas she did not.
"well?"
I sighed and began explaining the whole situation leaving out the part about the extremely tall being. she nodded along listening intently.
"well then. I'm sure you've had a long night and would like some rest." she stood yawning and I shook my head. if anything, now that I had told her about what happened I was more unnerved than before and it was looking more and more like I was getting absolutely no sleep tonight. she dismissed herself to her room and I sat there quietly curled up the only sound in the room was that of the fire in the fireplace crackling accompanied by the occasional howl of a wolf outside. one thing led to another and before a knew it, it was morning and the birds were chirping outside. when Ms. Maisie returned downstairs, I dismissed myself back to my house promising to return her late daughters clothing. she didn't seem to be worried about it. my house seemed empty, but it wasn't any more reassuring then it was before if anything it was even more unsettling now than it ever had been. even with that matter I still felt sleep finally began to creep over me so with every last ounce of energy I had I dragged myself upstairs and collapsed into bed.
crash
I awoke to a loud crashing sound. geez why is it so dark? surely, I only slept for like an hour? wrong. I turned over to see it was now 9 o clock at night meaning that somehow, I had slept fourteen hours great. I yawned sitting up and stretching before shuffling out of bed and downstairs the crashing sound had been the furthest thing from my mind until I stepped downstairs to find the potted plant by the front door knocked over the pot broken. I sighed and dragged myself to the kitchen to get the broom but before I could even reach the doorway to it, I felt cold metal on my neck and hot breath on my ear.
I closed my eyes tightly hoping it was just a nightmare but when I opened them the intruder the most of which I could see being a white sleeve to a jacket was still there pressing a knife to my neck I breathed softly not wanting the blade to dig further into my neck. the stranger chuckled in my ear a deep sadistic chuckle.
"you seem to be having some trouble sleeping."
I was confused as to why this pertained to the situation, we found ourselves in now. when he dug the blade in just enough to gently nick my neck.
"I think I'll help you. go. to -"
before the strange man could finish his sentence the blade was gone and the sound of a struggle ensuing behind me played out. I whisked around to find none other than the masked boy fighting to pin the wide smiled boy to the wall. I probably should have taken that moment to get the hell out of there, but I halted hearing the masked boys gruff voice for the first time.
"you know the rules Jefferey. no encroaching on others hunts"
"well I just thought I'd help out since you imbeciles can't seem to get the job done!"
I took a step back my lower back hitting the table next to me listening as they spoke.
"boss has different plans for her nothing like death by your pathetic hands!"
I grasped back for the centerpiece on the table but as my hand reached the wood grain of the table someone else's hand reached my pressure point successfully knocking me out. I woke up hours later. maybe it was all just a dream? my hand went to my neck which lead to the dismissal of that theory as there was a small scratch on my neck where the man I now knew to be called "Jefferey" had pressed a knife to the night before. sun cracked through the windows now and casted bright stripes along the bed. I scrubbed my hands over my face trying to rub away the remnants of sleep. I moved to the side of the bed slipping on out and padding across my room, downstairs and then to the kitchen and back upstairs with my glass of ice cool water.
I took a seat on the edge of the bed feeling something crunch beneath me. I stood up to see a paper now slightly crumpled that said, "you owe me one." followed by that strange symbol. normally I would totally be okay with being indebted to someone and I would handle it with grace, but the idea of being indebted to this monster was almost nauseating. I crumbled the note up throwing it in the bin hoping that maybe if I pretended that it hadn't happened that it wouldn't exist, you know what they say, ignorance is bliss.
