We step through the door just past midnight.
I've been thirteen.
Mom packs us off without question. She's been planning this for a long time. I've never seen her so determined. We get night bags and we're on the first plane out. She says the rest of our stuff will be sent to us.
The guy who greets us introduces himself as Parker McAvoy. He's proudly unsustained—or maybe it's just for our benefit—and his features, complete with Edward Cullen hair, reveal him as a vampire, which means despite his late-twenties look he could be anywhere from that to several hundred years old. With him is a beautiful, red-headed woman, wrapped in a dark coat.
I don't know where we are. Parker and his posse ushered us in through tinted windows and a vow of secrecy. We entered some sort of building complex, and we're here now in Parker's office. He looks at Vera and me, and exchanges a look with the woman. "Yes, we're pleased to have you. We take in cases like yours all the time; I'm sure you'll find everything you're looking for here." He holds out his hand to me. His vampire eyes are flecked with red. "Welcome to the Community, Vinni."
