Birds chirped and leaves rustled. The air was cool and calm and the atmosphere seemed peaceful.

Too peaceful.

My eyes fluttered open and I took in my surroundings. I was lying in a mangled heap on the grass in front of my house. Or what was my house. Slowly the memories of last night flooded back.

The storm, the fire and the dark figure. I hadn't dreamed it all.

I wasn't completely sure of last nights events, but I knew I wast dead and I knew........

MY FAMILY!!!! They were gone nowhere around. I knew they wouldn't have left without me. Then I remembered the figure and I knew that whoever they were had done something to them.

I got up of the ground and walked Over to the smoldering remains of my house.

Nothing had survived, or at least nothing of importance. I still had the bag that I had hurriedly packed last night. I spilled the contents onto the ground carefully and sorted through them. My phone, wallet, bus card, sketch book, jacket and a small book of photos. I sighed and flicked through the pictures. Most of them were of my family and I on holiday or at special occasions. The first tears spilled down my cheeks and I couldn't be bothered to hold back the rest of the water works. I should have been staying strong but I needed to let it out. I sat there for a while crying before I pulled myself together and decided what I was going to do.

I could inform the police, or I could hire a detective. Crazy ideas formed in my mind before I pushed them aside and decided on going in to town, the nearest police station was there and I could get some food and maybe a change of clothes.

I walked a couple of miles to the bus stop and caught it just in time. As it drove toward town I pulled out my sketch pad. Drawing always helped me calm down or let my mind flow properly. I began to etch the frame of the burning house and the tall dark figure. My hand flew across the page mindlessly. As my instinct took over and I created the horrible scene of last night. The scene that would bring a change of events crashing into my less normal life.
