Chapter III: White Canary

It was a long day and I'm really tired, and I still can't seem to forget what happened last time, I think I don't have the courage to show my face in-front of Nina and definitely Hale tomorrow. I jumped out of bed and tried to reason it out with myself.

"Why don't I try to stay away from Hale?! "
Nope, he lives here, we would probably meet everyday!

"How about, I ignore him for the rest of my life?"
Not either, he will probably tease me about it.

"How if, I ran away?"
But, there's no place to stay.

"Why can't I just kill the person!"
Because you already look like an idiot talking to yourself!

Ugh! I'm really getting burnt out trying to get a hold of myself! I think I wanna cry! Why not get some fresh air first?

I went near the big window and opened it, it was such a nice view, the moonlight was shining above the town, the wind blows cool but gentle, and the stars where peeking up the dark blue sky, it warmed my burnt out mind. As I was resting my mind, I met a white little bird, a canary rather, who was at the window. It was cute, it was white, and it was somehow...hurt. It has a broken wing, I tried to comfort the little creature, I can't just let it freeze, hurt in this cool breeze. I put the canary in my bed, I opened the lights, I close the window and let the canary stay in my room. I was caressing the cute little bird not knowing that I fell asleep kneeling in-front of the injured canary.

When I woke up, it was already morning, the lights are still on and the canary, I was shocked with what I saw! The injured bird lying on my bed was dead, I didn't know why!

But how? How could? Why should such little innocent thing die?

I was full of madness and curiosity, I was about to break-down!

I feel that I was starting to cry! Questions are all juggling inside my curious head.

Was it because I fell asleep? Is that why?
I held the canary in my hands, and caressed it's lifeless body.
I cried and I cried and I cried...

but, I suddenly heard something tweeting.
Something was moving in my hands. While I was trying to dry up my tears, the canary flew away my hands, I was overjoyed to see it live, and terrified how? It flew around my room and headed towards the door, it escaped. I picked up my jacket and followed it. It flew around the corridors and made its way exiting the minor, I manage to follow it.

It made itself go to a maze garden at the back of the minor, which I didn't know was there. By the time I entered the maze, I found myself lost, I don't know where the bird fly off, I tried to find my way and went inner the maze.

As I find my way, I saw a woman facing back at me, her hair was white, curled and short. Her body was a little pale, her dress was white and dirty, and it seems like she was injured. As I tried to call her, she faced me. The girl was beautiful, she looks like an angel, her big black eyes caught my attention. She was smiling at me, but before I spoke to her, she whispered.

"Thank...you..."

After hearing those words I suddenly fainted.

As I woke up again, it was still morning, I was on my bed, wearing different clothes, and on the side of my bed was Nina, playing with her teddy bear.

"Nina, what are you doing here?"

Nina faced me with a smile.

"Finally Penelope! You're awake!"

I was confused.

"Why? Was I asleep for that long for you to be all excited?"

She made a grumpy face at me.

"Yes dummy! You were asleep for like 5 days now! And Nicholas told me to look after you! You should actually be ashamed of yourself for you are my nanny, you should be the on taking care of me!"

I smiled and apologized to Nina.

"Sorry Nina, I didn't know why I was sleeping for days, don't worry I'll make it up to you!"

Nina smiled at me and nod.

"But, what happened to me by the way and have you seen a girl at the garden?"

Nina was confused with my question. Suddenly Nicholas entered my room and interferes our conversation. He held my hand and put his other hand on my shoulder.

"Good morning Penelope, finally you're awake, you made me worried sick for the last few days."

I faced Nicholas and smiled.

"I'm fine now Nicholas, but, what happened anyway?"

"Hale told me that your room's lights were on, and he came in, he saw the windows were open and you were kneeling on the floor facing your bed. When he carried you to put you in bed, he said that you were cold as ice, so he took care of you."

Wait...what? The jerk took care of me? What could he have done to my body those days? Wait... Was he the one who changed my clothes?!

I crossed my hands like a protective barrier for my body and I think I'm blushing.

"Don't worry, my brother didn't harassed you or anything. He just stayed by your side and made you no harm."

Fine! That's good to know.

"Um, Nicholas? Do you happen to know a girl, she was pale, she has white, curly and short hair? I saw her in the garden at the back of the minor."

Nicholas looks confused.

"Sorry, but I haven't seen a girl like that, and how did you know that we had a garden?"

"How about a canary? A white canary? It was on my bed that time!"

"Sorry but, I've never seen a white canary, I didn't even know that white canaries exist."

I was confused of what really happened.

"Nicholas, Nina, can I be alone for sometime?"

Nicholas smiled, and Nina was sad.

"Come now Nina, let's give Penelope sometime to rest."

Nicholas and Nina left my room.

When they left, I thought of what happened that night, am I going insane? I opened the big window, and saw the exact view I saw that night, I look by the side of the window, and it was the exact place I saw the canary. I look around my room, it was the exact picture I saw when the canary was flying. I went through the corridors and it looks still like the moment I was chasing the canary. I went to the maze garden, it was still like that. I went to the place where I met the woman, it was the same place but no woman.
