~•~Chapter 7: A Beastly Past~•~
"Our king? Our king is Kavan's father?" I ask in bewilderment.
Ms. Potts nods numbly,"He saw Kavan as a disgrace and was disgusted at the fact that Kavan, who was supposed to be the heir, was in fact a beast; so he would beat him constantly out of pure hate."
"What a bastard." I spit, I can feel my heart thumping rapidly from anger as I see the dried blood on the floor and the rusty chains."How is Kavan a beast then? Is the King a beast as well?" I asked and Ms. Potts shook her head.
"No. The King was infatuated with Kavan's mother who was a very beautiful woman. However she was in fact a demon. Out of ignorance, The King forced her to be his concubine. Kavan was concieved from this affair and at birth, he was unable to hide his demon attributes, and revealed his demon half. The King instantly questioned the mother and then had her locked in here with Kavan. When Kavan was of age to no longer need a mother, The King killed her and then manipulated Kavan as a puppet to kill the enemies of opposing countries."
"Thats horrible!" I commented in utter disgust; how can someone be so cold hearted to do this? Well I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, our King from the very beginning has been nothing but an ignorant tyrant. Poor Kavan. No wonder he has that behaviour.
"What made the King leave this mansion?" I question.
"Well we were tired of the King mistreating Kavan, so we befriended a fairy who gave us a potion that would make Kavan seem as though he was dead. When the King believed Kavan was dead, he simply muttered that he no longer had a use for Kavan and walked away. Now he's remarried and has a new son." Ms. Potts explained.
"How awful, he just moved on." I shake my head in dismay."But wow, I can't believe fairies exist! I thought it was but myth." I comment in astonishment; around here demons, spirits and witches are known, but not fairies.
"Yes they live deep in the forests."
"Amazing."
"I know you are expecting to leave once the rose dies, but please stay with him. He's changed so much with you around; he actually behaves like a human." Ms. Potts begged me with watery eyes and I succumbed to her mournful expression.
"Yes. I'll stay." I responded. Jem will have to go back by himself. We have never been apart before, but this is something I feel I need to do and want to do. I already grew attached to Kavsn I cared for him.
"Thank you!" Ms. Potts hugged me and led me out of the torture room."He will be estatic to hear this."
We walk down the dark crimson hallway and I turned to walk to my room when I saw a tall dark figure standing in front of my door. Kavan smiled at me as his velvet ear perked up at the sound of my foot steps.
"I was waiting for you." He said cheerfully and I looked up sadly at him, thoughts of the king's ill actions running through my head.
Kavan inclined his head to the side," Whats wrong?" He asked worriedly, his black brows furrowing.
"Nothing." I smiled, not wanting him to worry.
"Okay." He said, not really believing it and then he brightened up instantly," What do you want to do today?"
"What is there to do?" I smiled in return.
"Want to go fishing?" He suggested, excitement in his ruby eyes.
"Sure. Just wait a moment, I'm going to talk to Jem." I respond casually.
"Okay, I'll wait for you down stairs." He says and walks away.
I sigh knowing what I need to tell Jem and knowing that he will be thoroughly upset. I walk to his room and knock on the wooden door hesitantly.
"Who is it?" His muffled voice comes.
"Me." I say confidently.
He clicks open the door and welcomes me in."Soph, how odd for you to visit me." He comments sarcastically.
"Oh shut it." I roll my eyes and sit on his bed. He sits beside me and looks at me questioningly.
"Jem, I'm staying." I say bluntly.
"What?" His eyes widen.
"Im going to move in here. Kavan needs me." I respond.
"But we've always been together, I need you too." Jem says his eyes saddening and I feel a lump forming. Jem and I have been together ever since our parents passed away. Were practically glued at the hips.
I sigh sadly and tell Jem everything Ms. Potts told me. At the end Jem is quietly in shock. Then he groans.
"I know you have to stay, but I don't want you to stay. Soph, you're the closest person to me." He mumbles mournfully.
"You too. But I can't leave him alone, he's suffered so much." I state.
A depressing silence engulfs the room and Jem searches my face. Finally his face falls seeming to realize that I was dead set on my decision. He grabs my hand and looks me straight in the eyes.
"Okay I'll let you go, but you have to visit atleast once a month." He demands strictly and I smile sadly up at him.
"I promise." I respond and I hug him. He wraps his arms around me tightly. When he pulls away his eyes are red and I know he's trying not to cry. He's much more stronger than me. He chuckles as he wipes a stray tear from my face.
"It was your decision." He mutters and then gets off the bed, pulling me with him. We walk down stairs in a comfortable silence and we stop at the huge wooden, front door.
"Youre leaving already?" I ask in shock.
"If I don't leave now, I'll change my mind." He sighs and opens the door. I feel another tear fall down my face. We were together at birth, we were together when our parents died, we were together when we became adults, but now were seperating for the first time. I felt pathetic for crying but Jem was pretty the only family I had left; but I knew I couldn't force him to be here. This was something i wanted to do.
"Bye Jem." I say.
"Hey it's not forever." He smiles and nudges me.
"I know but Ill still miss you." I mumble; Jem was like a brother to me.
"Me too."
"Okay really now bye. I love you." I say knowing that if he doesn't leave I'll make him stay and I just can't do that.
"I love you too." He says and bends down to peck me on the cheek, before he silently walks out. It was a phrase we always said to eachother, but somehow this time it felt different when he said it.

So how was it? Not sure I like how Jem and Soph said goodbye. Did you?
Poor Kavan. I felt so bad for him as I wrote this.
