Kit's POV

To set the record straight, I never wanted to be in this party. I don't even know anyone here, aside from my fann. He was the one who invited me here – or more like -- begged me to be here. I had other things to do, I told him, more important than drinking and dancing in a soiree. But I regretted turning his invitation down when he said it was high time I meet with his family.

His brother will be here too, he said, and he was much excited about it. He wanted me to meet his idol, his favorite brother, the soldier.

And so here I was in a funny penguin suit and a silver half-mask trying to blend in with the shadows in the corners. Where is my fann again? Off to have some chat with his friends in the guests.

I helped myself to a glass of champagne and silently watched the growing crowd. There were people of various stature present, I was told. Nobles and politicians alike, mingling or dancing with their companions.

There were ladies in elaborately designed masks and gowns giggling in a corner as they watched and gossiped about the dashing bachelors lurking about. There were the serious aristocrats discussing the current state of the war, while their wives smiled and nodded appropriately.

Not to mention the gallant young men in attendance at the behest of their parents or possibly searching for pretty young ladies to prey on.

The party was impressive, I admit. The high-ceilinged ball room with branching ornamental crystal prisms hanging above reflecting the lights from the lamps and candles would catch anyone's attention. The music and everything else looked elegant. I felt out of place.

I met my fann's mother and father earlier, they were very much accommodating. We made small talk and I pretty much was welcomed into the family. They had to excuse themselves as they wandered around and attended to random guests in the house.

After unintentionally listening to the gossips near me, I let my tired eyes scan the crowd for anything more interesting than my plain-toe oxfords. There I saw a striking figure at the opposite side of the room scanning the scene just as I am. I laughed to myself and to his dilemma.

I drank on my glass again and began to notice that the guy was looking at me. Curiously, I stared back, waiting for him to look away. A server came by with a tray and I placed my glass back, thanking him.

I spared another glance at the guy again, and started taking in other details. He was tall, -- taller than me – slim but powerful build, exuding an obvious air confidence, standing proudly in a military-looking attire and a gold-studded mask. He looked dashing, striking and undeniably attractive. I might have smiled unknowingly, thinking of him that way.

Abruptly, he turned to his right and started walking. He reached the table where alcohols of any variety were being served and took two glasses – I guess. And then he continued walking, now to my direction. I felt nervous all of a sudden and I tried to look away, but my eyes were glued to his frame.
