By the time lunch rolls around Carter has already started complaining that he wants to go home. "The first day of school is so pointless anyway. All we do is go from classroom to classroom hearing the same boring beginning of the year speech we hear every year."

"Don't complain, it's better than sitting doing nothing." Ari argues.

We sit down at the table we claimed last year. Sofia and Dylan are already there. "So I assume I'll be singing by you, right?" Sofia scoots next to me, giving me a sly smile.

I clear my throat "I haven't heard you sing yet." I say, trying to scoot away from her.

"Oh please. You know I'm the best. You've heard me sing before." She bats her eyes trying to fool me. I know she hates this just as much as I do.

"You'll have to wait till Friday. Just like everyone else." I focus on my food.

She finally lets up. "Fine." She shimmies closer to Dylan.

Carter leans in close to me. "Suck up!" He says through a cough.

Sofia snaps her head back at us. "Excuse me?"

An evil grin spreads across Carter's face. "Sorry, I should have been more clear. I called you a suck, up ." He breaks the words to anger her.

"Carter!" Ari yells.

I get up and grab Carter's arm. "I'll see you at my house later?" Thankfully Ari nods. I drag Carter to the empty auditorium. We sit right in the middle of the rows of empty seats.

"You can't pick fights with them. As much as i would like to. You know their Ari's friends."

"Why? They're always extremely mean to you. Why can't I be mean back?" He pouts.

"They aren't mean around her. They're her friends, she likes them, we need to accept that." I occupy myself with a loose string on my jeans as we talk.

"Let's just tell her what's going on." He stands up.

"No. She won't believe us, or she will pick their side. I don't want to loose her." I feel his eyes burning into me.

"Why can't you just stand up for yourself? You never speak up." I look up at him for the first time in this conversation. His eyebrows are pushed together and his mouth is a tight straight line.

I look back down at my lap, not saying a word. He must have given up because he marches out of the auditorium, leaving me alone.
