Why is depression not more important in society?
Has anyone noticed that depression is one of the biggest ongoing things happening in society right now? No? Well, I don't blame you because it is rarely discussed. Sure, I guess it may be because people are scared to confront a condition which makes you seem 'broken'. That's not an excuse to not acknowledge it. How would you feel to have a condition such as anxiety or depression and feel like you need to hide it because it's uncommon and people would think you were a 'freak' or weird? I would know, I have experienced the feeling of both, and I know it is a horrible feeling.
But it's not as uncommon as I had thought it was. In fact, it is estimated that in Australia alone (yes, Australian facts because I'm Australian get over it) 45 percent of the population will experience a mental health condition in their life and in any one year 1 million adults in Australia have depression and 2 million have anxiety. Let that sink in for a minute. That's 12.43 percent of Australia's population having depression and anxiety every year. Why is no one talking about this?! Having anxiety and/or depression is no laughing matter, and is important. Saying that because you are not physically really unwell isn't valid. Comparing the importance of cancer and anxiety/depression is not valid either. That's not the fucking point. Yes, cancer is super important and things like cancer are super important and we shouldn't stop talking about them, but there are other issues that are important too that affect a lot of lives. It takes a lot of lives too. Suicidal thoughts are caused by depression, and one million people kill themselves a year. Wow. That just hit me. 1 000 000 people take their lives every fucking year. Imagine waking up to every single person you know and more being dead because they chose to end their own lives. That has to be one of the most gut-wrenching feelings in the entire world. But enough about suicide for now, I will come back to that later in this 'book'.
I will continue to talk about depression in the next chapter, but here are some resources for those who suffer from depression or anxiety and want support:
