Milah Jumped down the stairs like a silent spider monkey. Her mission- Get the cheese. She shimmied her way through the kitchen and heard her parents talking. She smirked, knowing her mother was most likely insane. She slid open a drawer and two cabinets and retrieved three items; cheese, napkins, and plates. She heard her mother say,'' It's not good for them not to know about the Games."
"I agree. However, I don't want to expose them to what the Capitol did to the tributes. To US Katniss. Us." My father's voice weakened and he stood up from his crouched position in front of Mother. Milah's eyes widened and she lost her balance for a second.
Dang, it! Of all days, not today! The 12-year-old thought as her father strode in the kitchen. She knew she was going to get caught. Before she could even move a step, Peeta took her hand and gave her a disappointed look. She lowered her head, ashamed, and went up the stairs and returned with her brother.
"What happened Milah?" Whispered Aaron. Peeta was filling a cup with water and cut both of his children bread and made them some sandwiches.
"Katniss, the kids heard us! I caught this little spy in the kitchen." Peeta tattled while making the kids walk into the room, where their weeping mother sat. Aaron squinted his eyes and took a look at his parents, they looked a tad bit different. Peeta's hair seemed to have lost its healthy glow and Katniss was, well breaking out in hives. Aaron thought to himself, What had they been talking about. Then he realized that he was the only one who didn't know what they were talking about.
Milah asked," Before we go on, I want to know what the hunger games were." At those two words, Katniss almost screamed. Peeta shot her a stare that made everyone cringe.
"We need to tell you something. We have kept f-from y-you for a long time. The Hunger Games" Katniss said between tears. Then Peeta continued," We should start at the beginning. There was a man named Snow. He created Panem and the districts. Every year, the districts would send a boy and girl to the Capital. Then they were sent to to-to"
"The Hunger Games." Aaron finished.
"Not quite yet. First, they were sent to the Capitol," Peeta Replied. Peeta quickly gestured her.
She looked off into the distance like nothing else around her existed. She was looking at a photograph of Peeta, a man holding a trident and making a silly face, and herself laughing at the man.
"Clove, Thresh, Cato" The mother whispered
.
"Katniss?" Peeta questioned while kneeling in front of her.
"Cashmere, Gloss, Cinna, Wiress, Mags, The Leegs, Seneca, Glimmer, Marvel, Rue, Finnick!" She cried as she reached one last name. "PRIM!"
Peeta quickly yelled,"You know what, it's already 8 o'clock. Time for bed."
" Milah let's go," Aaron said as he tugged on her arm, giving her no choice but to follow.
The siblings left and Peeta cradling his wife in his loving arms. For the rest of the night, he sang a melody as sweet as honey yet worn like your favorite book.
"Are you, are you coming to the tree?"
The next morning, Katniss crept down the hallway, not wanting to wake her husband up. Every morning before sunshine filled the house, Katniss crept into their backyard and into a dense wood. She grabbed her bow and arrows as soon as she shut the door to her house. Little did she know, another family member was up and going too. Aaron had snuck out of the house to the woods also. He walked for what seemed like years and reached an old, worn oak tree caught his eye. He put his basket of books on his back and started to climb. Left, right, left, right. The pattern continued two more times as he put his feet on the branches. Finally, he was sitting on a cushion he placed in a hole in the tree. Aaron cut the hole for days and it became big enough to sit in. The branches full of leaves made a cocoon so no one would see him, but he could see them. The basket of books was placed on a thick branch while he got down to business. He pulled out what looks like a communicuff and started dialing the letters CAPITAL.
