Alec POV

Maybe this isn't the best way. Where is a gun when you need one?

The breeze ruffled my loose t-shirt as I stood on the edge of the Brooklyn Bridge, swaying with the wind. I had promised myself yesterday that I would do this, but now, being up here with the river rushing beneath me, I didn't feel so sure.

I stared out across the skyline, hoping someone would save me before I gathered the courage to let myself fall. But there was no one on the bridge, strange for a Thursday morning. No one, just like the amount of people who care about me.

I shifted my feet closer to the edge and hoped gravity would do the rest of the work. I tilted toward, almost losing my balance.

"Wait! What are you doing?" I heard a male voice from behind me. I was curious, but didn't turn around.

"Oh, you know, just enjoying the view from up here. It's great to watch the water get closer before you die. The swirling blue waves are really calming," I replied sarcastically. I worried slightly that he might mistake me for being serious, or crazy, but I heard a chuckle.

"Funny you can joke at a time like this. Unless you really are crazy."

I finally turned around to see a tall, brown haired guy standing behind me. He seemed about the same age as me but I had never seen him before. He gave me a quick smile and motioned with his chin for me to get down. I complied, feeling strangely better than I had in ages.

We started to walk across the bridge.

"I don't think I have ever seen you around here before," I said shyly.

"I doubt you would have. I'm new here. Magnus Bane."

"Oh. Cool," I said awkwardly. Magnus glanced at me with an amused smirk.

"And you are..." he prompted.

"Oh yeah, sorry. I'm Alec. Alec Lightwood." I felt strangely comfortable around Magnus, like we'd known each other for a long time.

"Good thing I decided to take a walk around the city," Magnus interrupted my thoughts, "that could've ended badly. But you must promise me one thing."

"What?" I asked half curious, half anxious.

"Never try that again." His eyes were dark and serious and I found myself nodding my head in agreement.

"I promise," I whispered.

"Well," Magnus laughed, the easy smile on his face returning, "let's go eat!"

I loved that he didn't question why I wasn't in school, or why I was on the bridge. He just seemed to like me for me and I had never felt happier.

After grabbing a snack, we set on a bench in Central Park, watching the people go about their business. Magnus' arm brushed against mine and I felt a tingle that spread throughout my whole body and leaned against him. He wrapped his arm around me and pulled me closer.

"So," Magnus murmured, his warm breath tickling the side of my head, "who is Alec Lightwood?"

For some reason, this question amused me so much I burst out laughing. We talked and talked for hours, about school, life and each other. When it got dark, Magnus offered to walk me home. I gratefully agreed and we strolled along the busy streets of New York hand in hand. I wasn't even afraid of what my mum would say. Magnus had that effect on me.

We finally reached the door to my apartment. Magnus so I me around, a sparkle in his eyes, "Will I see you tomorrow?"

"Of course," I replied, cheeks flushed, "same time, same place"

As I turned to go, Magnus grabbed hold of me, pulled me close and kissed me softly. Lights danced across my vision and my body felt like it was on fire.

All of a sudden, life didn't seem too bad.
