I was so exhausted and thirsty and hungry that I didn’t even scream at Percy when he finally made it up the cliff. I didn’t even slap him-I would waste precious calories to lift my hand and hit him round the face, although resisting the temptation was extremely hard.
“You could’ve died.” I said, rummaging through my pockets, looking for some ambrosia.
Percy was lying on the rocky ground, his chest rising and falling drastically with each breath. He groaned and closed his eyes.
Failing to find any medical supplies of my own, I stumbled over to Percy and lay down next to him, my head falling on his chest.
He stroked my hair and I felt his chest vibrate as he chuckled quietly. I sent him a glare but his eyes were still closed.
We both laid there in a comfortable silence for a good fifteen minutes, gathering our strength and staring at the darkening sky. The island was quiet-too quiet-but I found it hard to worry about it.
It was peaceful. And that was all I wanted at that moment.
“Shall we get moving?” I murmured.
Percy groaned. “Nope.”
Ignoring him, I stumbled to my feet and exhaled loudly. “I’m going to scout around.”
Percy sat up, opening his eyes and frowning worryingly. “By yourself?” He asked.
I rolled my eyes. “Well, you’re hardly in a state to walk.”
Percy clenched his jaw and got to his feet, cursing under his breath. “I’m fine, Annie.”
I glared at him. “Don’t. Call. Me. Annie.”
Percy grinned but kept quiet, which was a wise decision as I was wondering whether a kick between the legs would shut him up.
We started walking (although it was more like limping than anything else), avoiding the forest that had flourished almost everywhere on the island, and sticking to the outskirts.
“We need to get some rest.” I said, mostly just to break the unnatural silence. “Find some shelter, or something. We can’t sleep in the open; who knows what’s around here?”
Percy kicked the bone-dry, rocky ground with his sneaker, sending some pebbles skittering down the cliff face. He grimaced.
I sent him a side-long glance. A voice in the back of my head was screaming at me to ask what was wrong, but another voice told me to keep quiet and pretend I hadn’t noticed it.
“After we get some sleep…” I continued, “We need to get some supplies: water, food and anything that is easy to make fire with.” I smiled. “If only Leo was here.”
Percy grinned, emerging from his sudden bad mood. “Oh, totally.”
“After we’re done with that,” I said, glancing at the area around us. “We need to find the highest point of the island.”
