"My point is, there is no place for me here"

"Have you ever been in love?" I asked Nikolas as he leaned back in his chair, kicking his feet up on top of the desk and let his head rest against his hands that were folded behind him.
He smirked. He is handsome, no doubt about it. That's what makes me wonder why someone as good-looking and young as he is would decide that his career pathway would lead him towards being a guidance counsellor? At that age, the last thing I'd want to worry about is teenagers problems.
"No, I haven't" He answered me. "Shouldn't I be the one asking the questions?"
"You should also be the professional here, but look who is the one that has blood-shot eyes?" I shot back and stared at him with a smug expression.
His face contorted into slight anger and worry, worried that I may nark on him. I hate narks, so I'd also hate to be one. "You've never complained about it before, why start now?"
I chuckled. "I wasn't complaining"
"What makes you ask if I have ever been in love?" He questioned, ignoring my previous statement. He unfolded from his position and leans forward on his desk, gazing at me with hazy eyes.
Even though he was stoned out of his brain, he still managed to do his job well enough.
"I just wanted to know if you've ever felt what I have." I replied softly. "Heartbreak"
"I have never really had the time for things like love—"
"Bullshit" I cut him off. He shook his head and grabs the apple from in front of him, biting into it. The crunching sound irritates me and I winced.
"It's the truth, Kelsey. I have never had the time for girls or anything like that."
I pondered on his answer for a moment. "Did you choose not to?" I asked lightly.
He laughed shakily. "I guess."
"Why?" I asked him, tilting my head to the side in curiosity.
He frowned a bit. "Like I said before, shouldn't I be the one asking the questions around here?"
"Yes and what was my reply?" I gave him a lopsided smile and he rolled his eyes.
"You're a different character, Ms. MacGarvey" He commented and we both laughed.
He rested his head on his hands. "My parents weren't the most—stable couple. They would always fight, over and over again. During my entire childhood I watched them bicker, scream, abuse each other and—I guess I just didn't want that"
"Oh, right" I muttered, unable to reply fully.
"Yeah"
He inhaled and exhaled heavily. "Today is Aren's one year anniversary, have you been to visit him?"
The sudden change of topic made it obvious that the memory of his parents was something he did not enjoy talking about. "Sorry for asking you such a personal question"
He shook his head and smiled. "It's alright, I guess we're even, huh?"
"I guess" I said and returned the gesture. "To answer your question, no I haven't been to see him. I'm going to visit him with Marnie when this session finishes"
He nodded and squinted his eyes at me, the forest in his irises barely visible. "How do you feel when you go and visit him?"
"I feel broken all over again"
K A L O N
She was sitting outside the school, her back against the wall and a book in her hands. Her soft dark hair drifted to the side as the wind blew threw the strands. Her glasses was perched up on her nose and she pushed against the middle, placing them back on the bridge of her nose again.
"Hey" I muttered awkwardly. She looked up from her book, her chocolate brown eyes holding happiness as they laid on me.
"Kalon, hey, sit down" She patted the space next to me and a small smile took over her soft features. I sat next to her and stared out into the parking lot, watching the teenagers exit the area.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Waiting for my friend, you?"
"Waiting for my brother" I reply and she nodded.
I turned to her with a blank face. "Where's your friend?" I asked, curious as I haven't seen her all day.
"She's in the counsellors office right now." She answered and flipped the page of her worn out book. I looked down at her lap and read the bold letters; 'Paper Towns'.
"You're such a nerd" I joked. She huffed and pushed at my shoulder, erupting a laugh out of me. "What's that rubbish about, anyway?"
"It's a romance story about a guy who chases after a girl he has been in love with since they were young, even though he barely knows her" She explains briefly. "It's an amazing story. It's also not rubbish"
She's adorable. I ruffle her hair and she pouts at me, giving a tiny glare. I smirked at her. "I'm sure it is" The words drip from my mouth like liquid.
"Are you excited to start at the academy?" She asked gently, tucking her hair behind her ear. I sighed and looked away, staring out into the distance.
"I guess" I answered her. In all honesty, I hated change.
She placed her hand on top of my arm and I tensed. She realised this and retracted her hand quickly, clearing her throat. "You'll be fin—"
"Marns?" A feminine voice calls from behind us. We turn to look at who it is and it's her friend. My body grows tense and I swallow awkwardly, unable to say anything. A smile covers her lips but it doesn't quite reach her eyes. "Hello"
Marnie stands up and she pats her clothes down. I tilt my head up to hers and her lips curl upwards. "I'll see you later"
"See you, Marns"
They both walk away with Marnie's friend giving me one curious glance. My face avoids any emotions as I watch their retreating backs. The way their bodies move is evident how different they are from each other. Whilst Marnie jumps around giddily, little giggles escaping her mouth, her friend walks stiff and her arms are wrapped around her body. She threw her head back and laughed when Marnie tripped over a pebble. Even though she has such a cold exterior, it seems to me her heart holds a soft spot for her best-friend.
Footsteps are heard and I snap my head to the side. Kol stands there with his folders in one hand and a mug in the other. He nods at me. "You ready to go?" He asks and I stand up.
Marnie and her friend already left, leaving Kol and I the last ones at the school. That's what I hate about Kol working so late, I have to wait until he's finished with his 'clients'.
When we jump in his car, he turns to me as he places his cup in the cup holder. "So, do you know those girls?"
"I met Marnie this morning. She's—different"
"Right"

a/n: Hey, welcome to the first chapter. I apologise that it's extremely vague, but I can't give out that much on the first chapter, otherwise the story would be over before it's barely even started ;)
I hope you enjoy the ride :)
