I watch as Hazel, the shelter care taker, opens the door to my kennel.
"There you go Melo." Hazel says. "I know it is small but it is the best we got."
I slowly walk in, sniffing at the corners of my new "home". The smell of wet fur, urine, and different food brands all mixed up is overwhelming. I try to gently lowering myself down but my hips pop and hesitates causing me to fall down. I whimper in pain and rest my head on my paws, close my eyes and let the aromas bring me back to the last time I was in this same shelter.
I was only a few months old during that time. Humans can by every once in awhile. The older dogs just laid there in their corners knowing their fates. Myself on the other hand, shaked from nose to the tip of my tail, had hope that I would finally find a best friend. When that day came, it was my most favorite day in my life.
I knew right away when Best Friend walked into the shelter. He just had that best friend smell to him, that best friend smile and when he noticed me, I could tell he knew as well that I was HIS Best friend.
"That one." He said pointing straight at me.
The care taker opened up my kennel so best friend could pick me up. He then carried me to his car and placed me on the passengers seat. Best Friend then rolled down the window and that was the first time I realized what fresh air smelled like. I was away from that dump and with someone I could trust.
Once we had gotten home Best Friend sat me on the floor next to him with a bunch of things I had never seen before. They where all different shapes, sizes and colors.
"The first thing we need to learn is names." Said Best Friend. "Wouldn't you agree?"
I obviously barked in excitement.
I'll take that as a yes!" Best Friend said chuckling. "My name is Ketch and your name will be Melo. Me-Low. Got that buddy?"
